1973 Satellite problem

I picked up a 73 satellite 318 with 113,000 miles last august. Im having a problem with the car boggin out when im driving. The carb and intake manifold are stock and I had the carb rebuilt with a new choke pull. Still boggs out when I punch the gas. It runs strong after warming up for a while but I still have the problem while driving. Should I look into getting new fuel lines, pump, or filter? What else could be the problem?

Have you tuned up the motor at all since you got the car? The fuel filter could be a little clogged but you would see it bog down all the time with that. The pump would cause you the same problem. I would be willing to bet that you have to adjust the carb and timing a bit, when the motor is warm. I take it that the car idles fine? Which carb do you have on there on?

w/ that many miles, the small blocks were notorious for getting carbon build up in the heat risers from the heads into the intake risers under the carb base plate. the risers are the 2 half moon slits at the top center of the heads, they allow heat from the block to rise up through the intake allowing the carb to heat up quicker so the choke will pull off faster on cold starts. What happens over time is that they carbon up then it turns to basicaly asphault. then the heat doesnt get up to the carb causing the choke to stay on longer flooding the cylinders with more fuel then air. the motors already warm not requireing a rich load. thus bogging down. and most of the time the carbon builds up in the valley under the intake by the fistfull allowing crap to gunk up your oil galleries. By all means yes ck, the timing and carb settings first, it may be that the float is too high. and the timing. let us know what happens.

all i can tell you is that its a 2bbl stock carb. i never thought about timing and thats really interesting about the intake risers. the motor has been tuned up. new plugs, wires and distributor.

Perhaps the atmospheric vent for the float bowl is clogged allowing more fuel than needed into the float bowl and when you punch it your getting the bog due to the rich condition, you can fool around with air/fuel mix all day and never quite get it right because of this. Just a thought.

I'm having the same issue (318- 2bbl carb). When cold it bogs down, runs fine warmed up. I rebuilt the carb, tuned it up, checked timing (6 degrees????). I have found that the thermostatic coil seems to pull off too fast , i had ajusted it to stay closed longer till engine warms up properly, but after after it sits for awhile and cold again there is too much tension on the choke plate and floods out when i try starting it. I havent tried replacing it yet....I adjusted my float setting to factory spec but after shutting engine off i can see fuel dripping inside the carb into the intake. Not sure what the timing specs for a 318 should be.......Just trying to get this 2bbl running decent till i can replace it with a 4bbl.

Like Bob said, maybe a hole in the float or some dirt between needle and seat.

no hole in the float... I took it back back apart and double checked the float setting...shook the the float at that time for any seepage but was dry. I had a Holley do that to me one time, float got heavy and dropped to the bottom of the bowl. I had replaced the needle and seat with the rebuild and was clean the second time I pulled it apart. I was disappointed with the carb kit... I matched gaskets before I broke the seal and looked to be the correct one (carb didnt have an identification tag) after i broke the seal I was able to check the parts better and realized I had a different style accelerator pump. Seal on my old pump was pliable yet so I reused it, everything else matched up. I'm wondering if my specs are going to be different?

The new (maybe wrong) gaskets aren't blocking any passage ways through the body of the carb?

I was pretty careful removing the old gaskets and i matched the new ones to make sure the holes matched and didnt block any ports. I really havent drove the car that much since the carb overhaul due to "maypops" for tires...I really think I'm just going have to do some fine tuning.....
