why do you say this? any 318 manifold from 67 on (non magnum) will fit a 340 or a 360. with those heads you gain bigger valves and lose a little bit of compression

Any intake manifold from a chrysler/dodge/plymouth 273 through 360 small block LA motor will fit. The heads are a good swap specially if you plan on swapping out the cam.
66 - isn't there a set of J heads (or something) that are best?

It was many a years ago and what i tried was kinda backward from my statement above
I tried to install factory 340 alu intake manifold(LD340) onto my 318. it would not physically fit as the manifold wouldn't go down far enough to start the bolts. I used a rubber mallet, stood on it.........It would not fit!
After market Manifold have a slotted bolt holes in them and will fit the slight difference between the 273/318 and the 340/360.
The block deck Height Is a little bit taller on the 340/360 block causing this problem.
As fare as the power added from early 360 heads on a 318 i never did. so i real wouldn't know
Or maybe it intake surface that different tween the two heads, All i know is that it would not fit! but the after market dual plain i installed did.(dual port sp2p...I think.)

i have a cast iron 360 manifold that was already ported out and i had on the 318 and it bolted up just fine but im probaly goin to buy a m1 dual plane intake. and its getting a bigger cam put in it. the Jheads are hard to get thats why i was asking about the 78 360 heads so it looks like so far for 200$ its my best bet just goin to do some portin on it.

technically, X heads are the best...but like the J and U heads, theyre expensive, and getting harder to find. for how ive seen them priced, its better to get a good set of heads. also, those heads were only "great" for what they were...modern technology has left them behind, unless your goal is to use a stockish mopar head.
i have 88 360 truck heads on my mirada, 1.88/1.60 valves, ported, and ive been very happy with them. the mirada makes substantially more power than my demon 340, that has 73 340 heads.

Was the 360 intake bolted to the stock 318 heads????????
If it was then i must have done something wrong, but I tried ever thing. would not fit, put my stock 318 manifold on and it bolted right up.
It is vary possible, that i did something wrong, as it was when i was a younger pup some 20 years ago
My buddy, at that time had a 68 dart with a 318 and bolt on some J heads and intake, with no problem.........so i have ASSumed that the 318 head was my problem.......hmmmmmm

my understanding is that any non-magnum small block head will fit any non-magnum block, from 273 to 360. i know that a magnum head will fit a non-magnum block, but it takes some machining work, i believe? something like the bolt pattern has to be altered? as an owner of both magnum and non-magnum small blocks, i cant imagine why i would EVER put a magnum head on any of my older LA engines. honestly, i would LOVE to rip the magnum 360 out of my wifes truck in favor of my ramchargers LA360. there is a ton more bang for the buck to be had from the LA engines.

I believe that the water passages or oil paasages do not line up either (its one of the other) between the LA and magnum heads. I have yet to build a magnum motor but I know it there is a lot more performance options out there for the LA motors than the magnum motors.
On a side note, I did see a hell of 360 stroker motor in a 98 jeep GC. All I can say is that jeep threw you back in the seat when you stumped on the go pedal.

If your 318 is all stock (pistons,cam,etc.) I wouldn't advise this. with the 360's larger combustion chamber, you will lose compression, & 318's are already pretty low! Your best bet would be a set of "high swirl" heads off of a 87-89 318. I don't have the casting #s handy, but they should be good for 25-30 more hp.

I tryed to put a 360 intake on my 318, but the EGR was completely different. The 318 had a sideways C shape port and the intake had a rectangle. So now i have to stick to my 2 barrel till I can get some new heads. Are the Holley 500's any good?
