You most certainly CAN, at least in the case of the RB engines, which have the small boss on the passenger side of the engine, near the distributer. These pretty much all had a stamping that ID's the CID, IE 440, 426, 26, 413, etc. The low deck engines did not have this boss.

So far as the cross member, I don't remember, it SEEMS to me that it won't clear the pan

I would CERTAINLY go for a 440 over a 413. Also, there is a lot of difference in brakes, sway bar, and torsion bars betwen even the 383 cars and such things as my old six pack. I wouldn't have one of these nowadays with drum brakes.
