MSD. They are the best out there and have been for a while. It all depends though on how you drive and if you are going to have a stock motor or build it up and how much. You don't want to go crazy on an ignition system just for a stock motor but at teh same time, you don't want to skimp out on it on a good build.

a good reliable basic ignition is pertronix. No control box required, just pull out points, put in new ignition and rotor and the route wire to + and - side of coil, then your done. Easy and cheap, took me 10 mins. to install, works perfect.

the factory mopar unit is good. dont know if they still have it, mp has a conversion kit that comes with everything. on the cheap, get the mp orange box, checker distributor and get a harness out of a junkyard car.

Electronic Ignition conversion

I'm in the process of gathering the neccesary parts to convert
the points ignition on the 318 in my '68 Polara to Mopar Electronic Ignition.

I'm doing this as a low-buck conversion & I'll be using the following parts -

- A new parts store remanufactured electronic ignition distributor
- A new parts store control module
(both of the above from a '72 Barracuda 340)
- Mopar Performance Electronic Ignition Conversion Wiring Harness
(ordered from Jeg's - part number 312-3690152)

My coil, cap, rotor, plugs & wires are all new and I plan to re-use them.

Total cost so far - $98

(I might need to replace my plug wires - They came with the car,
and while they are new, they say -
"High-Temp Super Stock Copper Core 7mm Wire" on them,
and I think 8mm is recommended with electronic ignition)

(I may also replace the old mechanical Voltage Regulator with
a new electronic replacement part - $20 at autozone (part # VR706).
The new type provides a constant voltage instead of the On-Off type
of operation of the old mechanical type, and electronic ignitions need
a constant voltage for best operation).

but still - 108 bucks for all the benefits of an all-new, All-Mopar
electronic ignition system ain't too bad..

I'll do a post all about the conversion once its done

I have a 64 383 in a 65 Belvedere. I recently bought a Pertronix conversion kit (about 8 months ago) and ran into a problem. The unit would not fit in my distributor. I think I will go the distributor route. Which distributor would not require a box on the firewall?

i have used MSD stuff did not like it. seemed to brake a lot. have used the Mopar Performance Electronic Ignition it was very dependable. and parts like ballast resistors are in parts houses every where. but the ballast resistors do tend to go out in the heat or cold. i would just carry two in the glove box all the time.

back in the 80's I picked up this diagram and picked up parts out of a junk yard, Now you have to get your parts from a swap meet or on line.

I had a electronic ignition on my 1966 318 I installed many years ago. I just dropped in a running 318 and got a pertronix 1381A kit. I can't figure our how to wire it ? do I use my ICU control box etc?
