I'm not intimately familiar with the old New Yorkers, but the older transmissions had the wierd old U joint on the rear of the trans, and I cannot for the life of me remember what they are called. Not desirable
Furthermore, the early models had the tapered rear axles, which aside from being weaker, and more difficult to get parts for, require a huge big puller to remove the rear hubs.
I'd buy the '68 if it were me
