Hey Guys. I have a leak that seems to be coming from behind the oil filter. I believe it is the O ring. I have referenced my service manual and can't get an understanding of how to replace this piecs. I am pretty sure it is an easy fix but could use some guildance. To get to the oil pump it reads that I would need to drop the oil pan? Is this necessary?

If its leaking from the plate that is mounted to the block behind the filter thats an easy fix. Remove the filter ,take a socket that fits the fitting that the filter mounts to and remove the fitting. Now remove the plate and you will find the gasket you need to replace. I am not in the shop so I dont have the part numbers for you. Shouldnt have to do anything with the pan or the pump. If you have any other questions just let us know.

Do I need to drain the oil from the pan to do this?

I just did an oil change thats why I ask..

You should be ok ,just watch for any pieces of anything that break loose in the area. Gasket etc.

fixed it today. looks like the gasket behind the oil filter housing was literally gone. I guess my two oil changes in the past 8 months excellerated the problem by pulling on the portion that the oil filter screws into. I found it challenging getting my 15/16th socket to sit on that thin bolt but for the past 4 hours no drips on my pan. Thanks guys for all the help. Couldn't do it without the help of forums like this

btw here are a few pics of my latest project. Out with the 318...in with the 440...Shes almost ready. I left most of this installation to the pros..

hi guys i have a 77 plymouth road runner with a new rebuilt 318. i am not getting any oil in the oil filter. the engine is oiling . the lifters and the rockers are being oiled. it has about 80 pounds of pressure cold. i took the oil filter plate off the block to check behind it.every thing there seems to be ok. nobody seems to know what the problem is since the engine is oiling.anybody have any ideas? thanks
