I was considering putting a big MT tire on my car ... mostly for looks. But my SS leaf-spring suspension worked fine.... for a high 11 second car. I was doing this on a 6-8" Hoosier DOT tire.
But after some considerations ... I decided against that since IF the car hooks well with a small tire. Pulling a bigger tire down the track(that is not necessary for starting line traction) will hurt both overall ET and speed.

Your explanation makes sense... I think for running 9's and faster going with a tubbed setup would work best...
