What was the fastest car in the late 60's early 70's?

Hey guys I was just wondering what was the fastest car in the late 60's early 70's? If we can put our biased sides to rest and answer this honestly. Also what was the quickest? Fastest being highway top speed, quickest being a quarter mile car.

I know these were considered the baddest on the street:

426 hemi cuda
440 six pack cuda
SS 396 Chevelle
ZL1 camaro
69 Z28 camaro come with a chevy 302...yes chevy made a wicked bad 302 that was from what I have heard capable of turning about 8k to 9k rpms all day long. They came with headers in the trunk.
Or would it have been a 69 SS 396 Camaro?
429 cobra jett shelby cobra

I know the z28 302 camaro would probably whoop any of those on the highway, I have heard they are scary as hell and never shut down on the highway.

Arrow Who's more BadA$$!

The main big three street muscle cars seem to be:
426 Hemi Cuda,
SS LS6 396 Chevelle
&
429 Cobra jet Shelby Mustang
All the others were very rare or way out of the normal guy's price range.

One of Peterson publications/magazines had an article a while back that
was going to settle the debate of which was faster in the 1/4 mile.
Chevy's SS LS6 396 Chevelle or Mopar's 426 hemi. Well they stacked the
deck right from the beganing! They did not use the Cuda but, a 69 Hemi
Roadrunner instead?
They ran 5 race's and the Chevelle won all of them!
They made both cars sit and cool off for at least an hour before each
race. It took them all day to run 5 race's? (Gee, wonder why?)
The WINNER! Chevy!!!!!

One of the Mopar Magazines read this and desided to re-test with the
same cars, the SS LS6 396 Chevelle and the 69 Hemi Roadrunner.
This time they raced the cars as if they were at a track with little to no
cooling time!(Real Racing).
Well the results were very different.
The Chevy won the first race and the Mopar won the next 4 getting faster
each time!
The WINNER! Mopar!

Well known fact, the Mopars gained horsepower as they heated up and
Chevy's lose horsepower the hotter they would get.

That's why the Peterson publications/magazine did it the way they did.
and that's why I don't buy there magazines(the Do what ever it takes so
the chevy wins additude)

So it depends on how you look at it! It's a matter of Opinion?

Hate to say it but your all wrong, it was the 427 Shelby Cobra, in every way. And it was a production car, anybody could buy one and the price was not out of reach.

That does it! You are gone for saying that a F*$d was/is faster than a MOPAR! LOL.

I'm just kidding. I know that the A-bodies were pretty quick with the 426 Hemi. As far as the other two "domestic car makers" go, I know that they made some very large and ugly lawn ornaments.

The 69 Hemi Daytona was the first car to break 200 mph in Nascar.

Nope, that was the fastest zero to 100 to zero. The Cobra was not set up for the quarter mile for competition due to being an open car.

Quarter mile records were held by the Hemi Superstock Dart for a long time.

The quickest quarter-mile machine ever unleashed by any factory, the car in question would have been one of less than 100 Hemi-powered Dodge Darts built by Hurst for Chrysler's Super Stock racing program in 1968. These cars were able to e.t. in the 10s almost immediately, were lightened with fiberglass parts and thin window glass, and featured the cross-ram intake that had last seen the light of day in 1965. The name of the game was win, and win they did, but the years of heavy track use and modifications made few of them "survivors." That said, such a vehicle showing just 33 miles and unaltered since new would be extremely valuable.

The Cobra ran 12's but the Hemi Dart ran 10's right out of the box.

The Hemi Dart was not street legal. It came with a disclaimer right on the side window. The Cobra was street legal and that is what the OP is about.

Pretty obvious IMHO.

If you want to include purpose built race cars then that opens up a whole bunch of other cars and the Porsche 917 would win. 1100hp in race trim and 1500hp in qualifying trim and 1750 lbs. "The 917/30 could go from 0-62 miles per hour (100 km/h) in 1.9 seconds, 0-100 miles per hour (160 km/h) in 3.9 seconds, 0-200 miles per hour (320 km/h) in 10.9 seconds, and on to a top speed of 260 miles per hour." But I don't think that's the spirit of the thread.

I would take a BB Mopar over anything but stock for stock... a 70 Buick Gran Sport Stage 1 is faster than any other factory Muscle Car (Muscle Car being defined as seating 4 people, not 2 like Cobra of Corvette.) The Buick GS has grudge races against Hemi Mopar guys every year and there are wins on both side but overall it seams the big ol Buick is the fastest.. i never said my favorite... but it demands respect either way. Dont kill the messenger please, im on your side lol

By definition wouldn't "fastest" equate to top speed and "quickest" equate to 1/4 mile times ?

The 1970Buick GS is a very under rated car, but the killer of that beast is the weight. I would have to believe a hemi dart could take it in the straightaway. 2 of my top 20 cars, what a sweet episode of pinks that would be!

I have read about this somewhere also. But I don't think it was the first car that has been able to reach 200 miles per hour... maybe in nascar but not in the long run, my dad all the time tells me how he scarred the **** out of himself in his 68 R/T 440 Coronet, its been lots of years ago but he says he was on a really long straight stretch of highway and there was no one around for miles so he decided to see what it would do, he said from a stop this car was gutless on the highway was where its ***** were. He said broke the speedo in it at whatever it read which he says was like 180 I'm not sure about that, but he says after that the car just climbing in speed like crazy and never shut down he swears he was doing well over 200 like 220 or so, and he says it would not have shut down had it not been for the tail shaft on the tranny.... it broke lol And that fun was over. Of course I'm sure the 69 daytona hemi had a bit more get up and go and possibly a bit lower gears in the rear end. And of course being the nascar thing he had to make some left turns so I'm sure that made it a tad more difficult to reach those speeds. Also keep in mind it was a just a single 4 barrel car, had it been a six pack or dual 4 barrel set up it could have probably reached those speeds quite a bit quicker. I believe him, he's never been the type of guy to fib about random stuff that doesnt need to be fibbed about lol.

I think in a drag race you might be right although i think it would be close either way. As far as overall top speed though i think the big Buick would kill it. Long wide wheel base, killer suspension for the time and a ton of torque with the horsepower to boot... I dont really know of course just my $.02

highway is hard to figure out, because no one ordered a muscle car with a rear end below 3.23
quarter mile was the 68 hemi fastback cuda

i am not saying he is lying, but unless the rear end was lower than the 2.75 that came from mopar, the motor would have been at around 9000 rpm. A stock 440 can't do that.

LOL probably not safely no... he said he broke the speedo in it and it kept climbing in speed forever. So he really has no clue how fast he was going. He seems to believe it was over 200.

I asked him he says he has no clue, he said it was real high geared though, he said he was lucky if it would squeak the tires takin off. I asked him when he had it and he said it was early 80's he is 50 now and he said he had it when he was 19 or 20. I guess there is a chance someone could have switched the gears in it at one point before he got it, but it's unlikely they would have put higher gears in it.

This thread reminds me of a debate I got into with Brock Yates about 12 years ago-he had said in an article that the 57 fuelie Chevy was the fastest production car in 1957 so I emailed him the results of the 1957 Daytona flying mile.

The 300C topped out at nearly 150 miles per hour closely followed by Dodge and Plymouth in the 140 range. The fuelie Chevy topped out at 138 if I remember correctly.

Never wanting to be outdone even though he'd been called out by documented history, Yates said he meant quickest not fastest.

Whatever the @#$ that meant...I'm guessing it was 0-60 time.

Playboy used to do an annual study of the cars. I remember I got back in country in '74 and was in the reception station at Ft Campbell. Found a Playboy from '68 and it had the LIST... according to it, the Vette (L88?) was fastest at 154 mph, 2nd was a hemi GTX at 152. A couple hours later and I was reading a Clarksville TN newspaper, and Jenkins-Wynn Ford had a used '68 GTX listed for $1200. Right about 1500 miles on the car when I bought it. Just a stripper 440, but that started my real love affair with Mopar.
