41 Plymouth Fuel Gauge

Finishing up on a 41 Plymouth, put in the new fuel cell and sending unit that I ordered from "Tanks", told them what i had and they sent it. The problem that Im having is the fuel gauge is pegging out on the full side. Ive tried every different combination on the wires, bench tested two different gauges and still getting the same reading. Called the folks at Tanks to make sure that they sent the corrent sending unit and was told that it was correct that 41 ford and plymouth took the same unit. I can disconect the wire from the sending unit (open) and the gauge peggs out on the full side, ground it out to complete ground and the gauge will read half. The sending unit is a 10-78 ohm. Does anyone know if this is corrent or am I missing something. Thanks in advance from a Newbie

You say, "I can disconect the wire from the sending unit (open) and the gauge peggs out on the full side."
This looks like your problem right here. If you disconect the sender you should have no reading at all. Pegged says dead short to ground. Most likely in the dash or gauge panel. The fact that it reads anything when conected means the gauge and sender are trying to work.
