Hey guys thanks for a great forum
i`m kinda new to this so bear with me. I own a real sweet 1969 numbers matching GTX w/440....The only issue is it has drum brakes, and it would kill me if I were to ever smack it up. That being said i`m looking into getting disc brakes installed. My question is, am I better off going aftermarket ? Or do I want to try and locate all the necessary parts (where)??? I do have a 1971 Chrysler Newport 383/727 trans for parts it has disc brakes........ Will the disc brakes from the newport swap into the GTX ???? Wishfull thinking, but I really want to get er done,so I can STOP ! ![]() let me know guys what you think ,thanks ![]() Last edited by 1969GTX : 04-04-2008 at 01:19 PM. Reason: needed to clarify |

Hello,
I guess it depends on whether your a purrist or not. To change that car you have may not be the thing to do if yours has all original stuff and numbers match. I'm sure the disc's would improve the stopping but it be a may be a step backwords on an original piece. Good Luck, |

HI GTX, I converted my 62Dart(b body) to Disc the donar car that worked was a 74 Duster(A body) Used the Duster spindles, It fit right onto my original A frame arms. Then it was just a matter of bolting on all the other parts from the Duster caliper brackets/calipers/disc.
Even went back to the bone yard and took the proportioning valve/master cyl.and brake lines. The disc brakes are so worth the effort you can drive the car much more aggressively. Latter on down the road (so to speak) back to the yard for a 70's Cordoba for it's bigger Disc and better pin type calipars. Don't forget to take the calipar brackets. Go for it Gtx and forget about the purest crowd there lame anyhow!! Jimi |

While the purists may be lame, they will also be the ones to cough up the biggest dollars for a true numbers-matching original car. Keep that in mind if you ever end up selling. That being said, do the swap, but HANG ONTO ALL ORIGINAL PARTS! They can be part of any future sale, which would improve your market among those lame purists!

Regardless of whom is whom
It just a dam shame to see a rare car turned into a rat rod, when the junk yards are full of routine vehicles that can be chopped and channeled and sectioned and lowered and louvered and changed without any regard for there valve.
Yes, yes, yes. If you do it. Save everything you remove. This could be an invaluable contribution to your bank account when your tired of the car. Have a great time. |

Hi Tee, I'm still smiling about the "lame purist" I can tell deep down you agree with me.
I've had other brand cars. It's just that B Mopars are really tuff cars they can take a good beaten and still come back for more year after year especially the drivetrain so therefor they should be driven hard once in a while and you need all the help you can get stopping them. If I wanted to walk around a car show wearing penny loafers putting down other peoples cars for the smallest insignificant reason and talking about the wonderful investment I made$$$ Would have bought a 60's corvette. Try banging gears hard on a regular basis with that puny T -10 trans and IRS set-up but they still tell you there muscle cars on par with everything else. Oh Boy ! Think I better go for a ride!! hope I didn't offend anyone. but seriously, really lose the penny loafers. |

You dont need disc's. I have a 67 and that year, the drum's and the disc's had equal stoping power. But if you wanna upgrade them, you should do what Doc said.

Nice car 67 !
And actually ... drum brakes do a better job at stopping BUTTTTTT ......If you try repeated stops .. the discs do better. But are you looking at cruising and going to the drag strip ? .... keep those drums. Road course ? ... get the discs. There are lots of things you can do to UPgrade the front drums .... interested? |

If you do go for a front disc conversion check what wheels you have. Most require you to have 15" wheels with a Internal Diameter of 13 5/8" to clear the discs and calipers!
If you want to upgrade the drums you could always go ceramic?
