HELP 71 ROADRUNNER BRAKES??

I am looking to replace my brakes on my 71 Roadrunner. the brakes on there now are in very bad shape. do i replace the drums? or should i convert them to disc brakes?? If i went to disc brakes whats a good price range that i might spend.. there are alot of people selling disc brakes for these old plymouths but not sure which one to choose if i did go that route!!

A 71's not that old!

Are we talking front or rear? You'll need to check the thickness of the drum if it's below the spec's stamped on them, then yes you have to replace the drums. If the drums are ok, them you may just need new shoes, and a wheel cylinder rebuild kit!

There are several makers of front and rear drum to disk conversions, price ranging from $700 to $2000+, but you get what you pay for, some kits include everything, new spindles, bearings, MC's lines etc! while some are bare bones.

If you are good at scrounging parts and turning a wrench then try scarebird's, http://www.scarebird.com/ They are the cheapest, basically they supply the custom brackets, you go to NAPA with a shopping list and build it yourself. I'm going the scarebird route on the fronts of my 64' over the winter when it's off the road, and I can scrounge parts on the cheap!

Other makers include Master Brakes, SSC among others, just type plymouth disk brakes in the google bar and you'll get all you need!

Have you actually gotten-into the brakes themselves ? .... If so -- what parts do you need?

yes they look really rusted, i would like to just replace them like they were original. do they sell kits for that? all i see are disc brake stuff.

If you want to replace then drums just go to napa they have all the parts needed. If you want to upgrade the brakes but keep the stock look thats simple also. You can go with bigger pistons, slightly larger drums with bigger shoes (depends on the ID of your wheels), Shoes with different linings, ceramic coated drums and shoes. What type of MC are you running a single line or duel? You may also want to go with a newer MC with at least a 1 1/8" bore!

hey 71 if you want drum brakes and shoes to stay with the car go to www.musclecarbrakes.com and if you want the disk brakes made simple and at a reasonable price go to www.ecihotrodbrakes.com ... the brake shoes and drum set up is a stage III muscle car drum brake system with matrix ceramic shoes .............
