C-Body Front Gas Shock help

OK. This is probably a dumb question but here it is. Back in 1983 I installed KYB shocks. I want to put in a new pair because I think they could use it. I don't remember it being an issue then. But hey I am also 25 years older now. I can't get them out to put in the new ones. I can compress them for a short period of time but not long enough. What is the trick. They are too thick to drop through the control arm but there is not enough room to move them to the side and out. I am not inclined to drop the ball joint or something either. I thought about drilling a hole in them to relieve the gas but.... I don't know about that. I am doing this on my back in a driveway. Any ideas.

Have you jacked the car up and left the suspension hang free? That may give you additional room.

Can you compress them and have someone tie some wire on them to keep them from extending. Sounds like they need to be compressed as far as possible to get them out.
