Glass Pack for my 1969 Newport Custom?

Greetings crewmembers.

After years of MoParless life, I'm about to purchase a C-body.
I'll be the second owner of this beautiful 'Spinnaker White' Newport Custom. She's very straight, no rust in excellent condition.

I know this car isn't a 440 Road Runner- it never will be.
However, I would like to improve the sound without freaking-out the 2-barrel. I'm interested in installing a Cherry Bomb glass pack.

Very interested in your thoughts regarding the size 'Bomb' I can use.

I'll have this 'Fuselage' vessel dockside next week.
Pics to follow. Smokey burnouts later...

Thanks for your help, Boompy

Cherry Bomb ? NOT very old school. uh bob

Mr.4spd 01-11-2014 07:02 PM

Congrats on your purchase and welcome to our forum. For my tastes and money I'd go with a flow master or summit "race welded" muffler, much better sound in my opinion.

Boompy 01-11-2014 07:57 PM

Thanks for the welcome Mr.4spd.

I've been away from 'MoPar world' too long.
If I flow more exhaust with a Cherry Bomb, Flow Master, or the Summit "Race Welded" muffler you suggested, will I have to tweak the 2-barrel carb mixture and flow more go-juice?
In the motorcycle world, aftermarket pipes always means a rejet to keep proper balance. Very easy to create a lean condition, loose performance and burn valves.

As odd as it may sound, I'm trying to keep my gas milage affordable with this 383 V-8. This will be an every-other-day driver, albeit with a 24 gallon fuel tank. Not looking to build a 9 second 1/4 mile car, just a little more sound.

Thanks for your guidance, Boompy

Mr.4spd 01-11-2014 08:12 PM

Nah, cars are typically jetted rich to begin with. I wouldn't worry about it, though you can read the plugs to make sure.

Boompy 01-12-2014 06:39 AM

Thank you for the advice Mr.4spd.

I'll look into that Summit "Race Welded" muffler you suggested.
Noise and 'sound' are two different things.

Pics to follow, stay tuned.
I think I'm gonna' like this forum.

Ready, Set, Boompy

I like the Cherry Bombs... They sound good. Are are a fair quality replacement.
If your not wanting to spend the money for a complete exhaust, I would do Cherry Bombs....

Were is the car at that you had to have it shipped?

Boompy 01-12-2014 03:32 PM

Actually, She's only about four blocks from my house!
You may have misunderstood my post.
She's a 'boat'... My driveway is the 'dock'...
Sorry for the confusion, Bob.

I heard Her run today. Started right up.
I think a good tune-up is in Her near future.

More pics when I get Her home.

Get the one chamber race flowmaster they baby will talk

For whatever reason, I’m a big fan of the glasspacks. Back in the mid-nineties, I put the longest Cherry Bomb I could find (can’t remember the length, but it sure seemed close to two feet lol) on my ’68 Fury with a 2bbl and that sucker had a NICE tone. Deep and rumbly without being loud as all get out.

I later pulled the garden hose trick and was even happier. It’s tough to beat a glasspack for the price. I say go for it.

Also, nice ride!

lou3500 01-13-2014 03:27 PM

These are Magna Flow Magna Packs they are stainless steel outer case with stainless steel packing [no fiberglass to blow out] lifetime guarantee.

I'll have to look that one up.
I priced the Summit "Race Welded" mufflers.
They run about $95.00.
I guess the Flowmaster will be roughly the same.
Thanks for the suggestion, Purple Hornet.

Glad you like my 'new' vessel.

I saw one of those "Car Guy" shows on Discovery.
The guy had a 1968? Newport he took to the exhaust shop.
He told the fella to "make it loud".
The muffler shop guy installed longer Cherry Bombs on the car (than what the owner ask for) to keep proper back pressure? Anyway, the car sounded good AND ran right.

So whats the magic with the length?
I think I'm going with the glass pack, but, do I purchase one that is the same length as the stock muffler- so I can salvage as much of the stock exhaust system as possible? Or do I buy a somewhat shorter "Bomb" and the local exhaust shop can make-up the difference?

I guess what I'm asking is: where's the line between good "sound" and just noise? I know my Newport Custom isn't going to snap my neck on acceleration, but I don't what to pay money for coughing, bogging and flat spots.

Oh yeah, what's the 'garden hose trick'?

I want to thank ALL of you who have stepped-up and tried to help me out.
I promise to do a good burn-out for every one of you! :hello:

All ahead full, Boompy Rightfoot

I forgot to say, I'm diggin' your '66.
Once upon a time, I had a '65 Formula 'S', a '66 Barracuda, and a '68 Coronet 440. Time and money made them all go away.
Miss the '66 the most...

I think some of this is going to depend on how good the rest of the exhaust system is holding up.... If it's rusted you night have to replace all the exhaust... I sure the muffler guys will pinch the tubing with there channel locks and see if there are any other bad spots...
But normally shorter is louder and longer is quitter....
I say "let the pipes sing"... :)

It has been my experience that shorter is louder but also the closer you can get the muffler to the manifolds/headers the louder and raspy it gets, however on our cars they will hang low and drag so you gotta put them where they belong from the factory. Thanks for the kind words I love my A Body's but my wants are for another Road Runner like my high school car. These are what's on mine!!!

TVLynn 01-13-2014 07:28 PM

Way back when, I was having some glass packs put on my 66 Coronet. He knew my father.. Asked if I wanted to go to lunch ? Sure !! We got into his 57 ford wagon and drove around the corner to the Airport (Upland)?? Flew down to Long Beach and had Lunch

RacerHog 01-13-2014 07:32 PM

Good Place to have lunch... :)

Skwerly 01-14-2014 08:25 AM

I’d go for longer. You get the rumble without the brash business. you’ll be fine with backpressure too, for sure. Plus, if you aren’t running headers, it isn’t much of a worry.

The hose trick: drive said car around town to get things nice and warm. Then park in your driveway and literally shove a garden hose up the exhaust with the car OFF. Run some water up there for five or ten seconds, then start said car and rev it good a few times. Whamo! Lots of the fiberglass comes out and the car is a tad louder and even deeper. :D

Worked like a charm on my six eight.

Thanks for the tip.

I'm having router trouble with my PC.

I agree (longer). Currently shopping for a "Cherry Bomb".
Thanks for the 'hose trick' tip. I can dig it...

As soon as I can get my router problems ironed-out, and I get the vessel dockside (fog horn blowing in the distance), I'll post more pics of this most amazing time capsule. Wait till you see the interior- like new! Dash board instrumentation features a "cold" light...

Can you recommend a good engine compartment degreaser that won't remove the paint? A clean machine just runs better.

Again, thanks to all who have tried to help me out.
Much appreciated.

The one I bought was $29.95. I just checked their site and that's still the going price.

OK, did some more online research on the Cherry Bomb brand glass pack.
Pep Girls (Fanny, Flo and Jackie) sells them so I took a trip to York, Pa.
Had a very helpful motor head fella talk to me about glass packs.

They had the Cherry Bomb in stock.
Next to them on the shelf, they also had the Magna Flow glass pack.
The Magna Flow is aluminum, the Cherry Bomb is painted steel.
Both brands were $39.99. I think I'm going with the Magna Flow brand.
Better materials used in construction and should last longer.

Sealed the (notary) deal on Saturday- I now OWN this 'fuselage body' Chrysler.
Screwed the tag on, it was 19 degrees and blowin' needles: COLD!
The garage will put a new state inspection sticker on and call me.
If all goes well, She'll be in my garage (boat house) Monday night.

Excited- does it show, Boompy Rightfoot

Back in the day

In the 70s I ran Orange Peelers because they seemed to have a deeper growl than the Cherry bombs and not quiet as loud. I love your car. Great condition. I see this car with a low growl maybe flowmaster super 44's? I used to live in the great PA (Erie and Philly) and went up there a lot when I moved to Maryland. If I was close, I'd let you look at a few old intakes I have (all 4 barrel iron). Dirt cheap
