What is the Vacuum range on a 88' model 318 LA engine.

Hello Gentleman. :welcome: :welcome: :welcome: I have a question. I need to know what the Vacuum range should be on my 318 engine. Allow me to tell you about my 318 engine if I may. My 318 is a 88' model stock LA engine. It was rebuilt in 2002 and dropped in a 65 Plymouth Sport Fury. My friends call it "The Odd Rod". The bore and stroke are stock. It has a Comp Cam CS XE262H 10 cam and lifter kit including a Comp Cam Timing chain and gears. Along with the Comp Cam it has a Edelbrock Dual Plain Aluminum Manifold with a Edelbrock 1406 with Hooker B-Body Headers and Pertronix Ignition and a Flame Thrower 40,000 Volt Coil. The trans is a 727 Torqueflite with a 2200 stall converter. I have been having what looks like a vacuum leak but cannot locate it. A month or so earlier I did a compression test. The over all compression was 140. Which is good but I didn't check the Vacuum at that time. Yesterday I checked the timing which was spot on. But when I checked the Vacuum it read 11 to 12 inches. I want to say that the Vacuum after the engine was built was around 18 to 19 inches. Could someone please tell me what the Vacuum range is on this engine.

Long time no see... Hope Business is slow for you.... Not sure if you remember me or not?
You are spot on with your theory.... 18* is the where it likes to be in Stock form....
You just said that the timing was spot on? 18* I would guess...
32-34* all in by about 3000 rpm or so.....

Check the burn on the ground side of the spark plug... The burn should be about 1/2-3/4 ways around the curvature of the strap.... that kind of shows the timing if about rite.....

Good Seeing you... Welcome to the site....

Hello Bob. :welcome: :welcome: :welcome: It's good to hear from you as well. I do indeed remember you. You have been really helpful to me. I have been leaving you messages of your pm from several months and haven't heard a word from you. I'm glad that you are doing good. Hope your family is doing good as well. The Plymouth has been running good. Have what seems like to be a vacuum leak. I did locate one on the top of the carburetor and had to replace the gasket under the airhorn and that vacuum leak went away. But there seems to still be one. I knew that a vacuum test would tell me if there was one or not and I had not done one since right after the engine was built. So I did one and you already know those numbers. So we concur 18-19 inches in Park and 32-34 inches at about 3000 rpm's.

At idle with a 262 cam I would suspect more like 16-17. 32-34 is the timing not vacumm

Yep..... On what Lynn said....

I'll have to go check my " UserCP"... I dont use that much... Sorry..

Hello Bob and TVlynn. :welcome: :welcome: :welcome: Okay I think I got it now. 16-17 inches with a 262 cam at idle. Now my rpm idle runs between 850 and 900 and 800 to 750 in drive. So it should be 18 to 19 at 3200 to 3400 rpm's ?

inch of vacuum should be... 18 At Idle... Lets start there....
