Breaking up

Hello ,I have 340 ralley Challenger, now it has 440 4spd usded stock Elc ignition for a 73 car my problem is car runs poorly ,feels like ignition problem everything is new motor is 1976 rebuilt , Iwas checking voltage from battery to ballast resistor only have 10 .4 volts ,wondering if it needs a full 12 , also swapped out control box car still acts the same . car also doesn't run Well with no load while driving ,if your on the gas it will stay running , but it feels like it's struggling to run ,like it's breaking up ,Vacume is around 10 pulls up to 15 to 18 when you rev it , I also changed the Distributor cap , thought maybe it had hair line crack. Any ideas ???thanks Gregg

Perform a Compression test... Lets see what that comes up with.....
My own theory is "You cant tune up and engine that has bad compression"..
If that comes out good. Then a tune up might be in order.
Check for Vacuum leaks also...
Hope this gets you started Greg...

OK....Check for vacuum leaks.... Try resetting the timing.... and as Iowan said. Make sure you have a good coil and voltage to it...

One other question comes to mind? Did the car ever run rite after the rebuild or within the 50 miles?

Keep us posted...

Well tryed again to get car timed no luck the motor wants 38 just to run if you try bringing it back say around 20 it just dies ,we went and checked the valves they are adjustable but seemed fine ,I will try a different carb Sunday ,then I was going to try old school points set up I have an older points distribotor, just to see if it runs an better , last shot I'll have to pull the front of the motor apart ,maybe there's something wrong with timing chain , never had a motor need so much timing to run bought this 440 as a rebuilt motor no idea what cam put it seemed to be all intact

Also Check for vacuum leaks.....
You could be on to something with the cam timing. Someone might have installed it wrong...
