Engine Identification
 

Just went with a buddy to buy a 1967 D100 Sweptline. Cool old truck. But we are trying to figure out what engine is in it. I don't think it's the original engine. But not sure if I'm reading the VIN correctly either. The warranty plate says 1161170140. So I'm really guessing here but, "11" = D100; "6"= 6 cylinders; "1"= Michigan; "170" = displacement....

I'm probably wrong about most of that but it definitely has a V8, so if my interpretation of the VIN is correct then the engine had been replaced. I'm mostly an old Ford guy and I know how hard it can be to tell the the differences between the ford FE engines, I'm hoping it's easier to tell the differences between the old Dodge engines. I looked up pictures of the 318 but I'm not sure if the 318 block is exactly like another displacement engine?

Point is, are there any casting marks or distinguishing features that will help me ID this engine?

Old 318 dist in the rear.. It could be a LA318 standard 5 bolt valve covers or a 318 poly with scalloped valve covers two different engines

The distributor is in the rear. I would guess that all the LA family V8 engines would have the distributor in the rear. (But like I said, I'm more of a ford guy so I could be way off here) So my question is, visually, how can I tell the difference between a 318, 340 and a 360?

Also, aren't valve covers replaceable and or interchangeable?

There will be a casting number on the left side of the block.. With the displacement after the casting numbers.. If you google identification of casting numbers for mopar engines it will come up and it will tell you what year it is...Bill

Might be easier to see the stamping immediately under the head on the block on the end of the front of the driver side of the block. This is a long nu. with the CID in the first several numbers. I can never remember when they went from the A to the LA in pickups. If the thing as straight valve covers, LA, if they are scalloped on the exhaust side, then A (poly) Please do not call them a "wide block.)

I climbed under. There's a long list of numbers that I couldn't make out (it was getting dark), but the last three numbers were 318 so I'm going to go with it being a 318.

You are right it is a 318..You can find out what year it is by running the casting numbers...Bill:)

in those years dodge pick up may not have the same engine as cars. and things like water pump and so on could be diff that you might think.
