73 4wd W150 360 to 383?
Will the bellhousing and tranny (4 speed) and flywheel from a '73 360 work with a 383?

NOPE
All small block engines use one bell, and all big block, IE (the older) 361, 383, 400, 413, 426 (wedge) and 440's use another. We actually did this swap on a '74 W1 back in about '76, and put the 360 into my landcruiser. In our case, we used a scattershield, which I had, to fit the 440, and welded ears on the scattershield (it's steel) to mate to the truck 4 speed. I don't remember if my friend enlarged the "main hole" in the scattershield, or turned the front retainer on the 4 speed to fit the hole. Otherwise, you'll need a bellhousing and flywheel that mates to the truck 4 speed. all Mopar gear drive starters "fit" the same mount, however, some of them are lighter duty than others. The 360 starter, if in good shape, should work. You'll need a rear sump pan and oil pickup to fit the truck body, which should be available, the proper engine mounts and brackets. You'll need to find, or build, brackets for power steering, AC, etc. Back in the day, this combo we put together made a real stormer. It didn't get much worse mileage than the 360, running a "Roadrunner" (335hp) cam, and put out a lot more torque. He used it to pull his Jeep. This is pretty much a bolt in Last edited by 440roadrunner : 01-07-2008 at 10:30 PM. |
