1964 VIN decoding help
Hello to all, I am looking at a 1964 Barracuda for a resto mod. It currently has a 273 one barrel with an automatic push-button on the dash. I have basically decoded the vin number but have a couple of question. The stainless steel tag on the left front door hinge pillar post has what looks like factory numbers stamped on it, 42693274. The confusion comes with the addition of the letter and number, V4 before the factory numbers. It looks like someone took a number stamp and stamped them in with a hammer, it now reads,
V442693274. This tells me this is a, V=barracuda V8, 4=Valiant Signet, Barracuda (1964), 4=1964, 2=Dodge Main, Hamtramck, MI, 693274=production number. Am I missing something or is this how they stamped the early barracuda's?
Also, where is a good web site to go to to decode the fender tag?
Thanks

64 Fender Tag Decode
I've been trying to decode my 64 Barracuda fender tag for over two years now. I can find 65 decodes but no 64. I'm talking about the alpha/numeric section that lists options such as engine/trans; etc. I've been directed to a lot of sites but they were no help with the most important alpha/numeric section. I have a "Factory Hack Job" four speed car built April 17, 1964. It has a torch cut floor and a pop riveted trans cover. The original molded carpet is still in the car. I would like to verify that it actually is a FHJ. I have contacted Year One (twice) but they have not responded with this information. I would like to assemble a list of these special cars and compare fender tags so that we can document these hastily built factory hack job models that will forever go down in history as a desperate last minute response to the impending release of the four-speed Mustang. My car was built the very same day the 1964 1/2 Mustang was released. I can just imagine the assembly line frenzy as workers were chopping up these cars in an unheard of way; just to get them out the door as soon as possible. While the Barracuda is the first pony car, beating the Mustang by just over two weeks, These FHJs truly embody the factory hot rod spirit that soon became the norm.
