small block bellhousings

Hi everyone,
I am new to this site and hope you can help me with a clutch swap that i am trying to do.
I have a 1966 dodge dart with a later model 318 and an 833 4speed,
i want to install a larger clutch as the one i have now is the 9-1/2 inch.
i have purchased a new flywheel, and clutch set up.
my only hitch is the bellhousing.
the one i currently have on the car is for the 273 v-8 and it is too small for the larger clutch and flywheel.
my question is, will a 340 bell housing work with my 318 block?
i have a 340 bell housing but was told that the 340 was different than the 318 or the 360 blocks and would not fit. therefore the bellhousing must come from a 318 or a 360 motor
is that true?????
any help would be greatly appriciated.
thank you, Von Wagner
