Belt drive

Hey all .. I just received the latest Jeggs email and comp cams has a belt drive gear set priced over $400
I think they are crazy
and someone who buys it even crazer
u got to have more disposable cash than sense..
what do you think?

DDodger 02-27-2015 07:35 AM

well as a po guy i won't be buyin' one. on the other had, you do this.........you take a modern vehicle, strip off the belts, pulleys, brackets and bolts, ALL of them and go down 'n price 'em at the dealer, and then you let me know how that all goes

RacerHog 02-27-2015 01:17 PM

Test proven to be worth it in the racing world..... Horse Power Cost Money..:)

moe7404 02-27-2015 02:00 PM

my pappy allways said it cost money to go fast "how fast do you want to go? how much money do you have. its the same Q"

Gorts 5th 02-27-2015 03:28 PM

How much hp.will that drive add a 10th of a hp
any tork maybe a lb
i dont see a justification for such.a cost and how long will it last
it most likly costs less in materials too manufacture that than a standard chain and gears

Faster means stronger beefer parts not a belt... chain will out last a belt any day of the week a belt may last 55 65 maybe 70 000 miles a double roller a 100 200 000 miles .
And I bet you have to block off the oil from hiting the system....more cash.. its crazy !
even if I had cash to wipe my azz with I know when im being taken advantage of.

Idiots ...No
major sponsered race team maybe
the pics suggest they have tons of sponsered parts
and the belt would last as long as one of their motors befor tear down and rebuild
1 maybe 2 runs
10,020 hp
if they have cash to spend on a belt good for them ...

I read the specs they claim its stronger than standrd chain and gears including gear drive systems they also say it soaks up some of the crank harmonics
i have never heard of a belt out lasting a chain or gear
Maybe racer hog can explain this for us back yard motor heads the value of this system over chain and gear systems ..

RacerHog 02-28-2015 08:02 AM

Hummmm... Honda Toyota and Nissan, "Just to name a few" have seem to do just fine with them.

Anyway... I do understand your point of the money issue.... :)

Now your starting to get it.. When you look into this at a Performance Product stand point. Such as from Jegs. You got one half of it rite (Crank Harmonics) the other half is to simply stop that harmonic from being transferred into the valve components causing valve-train harmonics and flexing. Hope that makes it a little clearer....
No picking on you Gorts... Just turning thinking cap on....
:)

Ps I typ c a s h and I get that icon w t fric

RacerHog 02-28-2015 08:23 AM

hahahaha.... We get the point... :):)

Gorts 5th 02-28-2015 11:43 AM

Racerhog we are always good
I new you could shed more light on it
so in mopars the valve train flex is as bad as with chby and frd.
i understand that shaft monted rockers are less suspect to this than pedistal mounted rockers
I didnt see a listing for mopar ..if they have one would u use it ? Please exsplain the bennifits of this system for our motors.
thanks .
ps only saw it listef for chby

RacerHog 02-28-2015 03:03 PM

Sure Why not????
https://www.google.com/search?q=2.2+...ml%3B642%3B800

Would you like to buy all the gears for this set up.... Would be kind of expensive dont you think?
I believe the belt has test proven them selves to be worthy in the OEM Area?

I think also the Race one have proven there place also....

Mr.4spd 02-28-2015 06:19 PM

My next fresh build is getting one for sure. I certainly wouldn't tear a complete engine apart just to swap one in though.

pro-tech 03-01-2015 01:15 PM

I think he finally got it... I don't really get the original post, When you are building a performance engine $400 is a small drop in the bucket.... It has always been if you want to play you got to pay... Belt drive is better and if it weren't they wouldn't use it on super chargers.. Timing chain work ok but are not as precise as a belt... Think about it as soon as the chain is installed it starts to stretch as it does the cam timing is able to change... The belt has a tensioner to keep it tight and the cogs keep it in time.. Many of the performance applications the belt is exposed and is a lot easier to change then a chain which requires engine tear down to do.. So if you are racing are building a GO machine then the belt is the only way to go...As Bob has been saying....Bill

Belt Drive? Give me a chain driven or Gear driven timing set any day!!!

Gorts 5th 04-06-2018 01:46 PM

Hey all its been awhile.

Ok i got a update on this thread
and im wondering who has used this on their engine?
im thinking its a major modification.
question....wouldn't you have to stop the oil from coating the belt and associated pullies?
im asuming that the above mentioned imports don't alow the oil on there belts.
so is this still a worthy investment if major modification is necessary?
verses gear or standard double rollers?
