Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By David Gerard

SONOMA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 24th annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 4.420/266.53, Now #1

4:13 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 49 percent, barometer 29.86 inches, adjusted altitude 2,029 feet, track temperature 114 degrees.

Seventeen FC's, so someone will go home early this weekend.

Clean leave and a full, but soft pass, for Diehl.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.512/205.54, Now #2
Right Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 10.759/67.72, Now #3

It's great to see Densham back out at the races. He has a clean start, but starts to drop cylinders and slows after mid-track.

Thiel has too much clutch for the track and strikes the tire right off the line.

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.315/282.01, Now #1
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.678/183.05, Now #4

Troxel gets away second, but marches out ahead and pulls steadily ahead for a good tune up pass.

Lee drops a cylinder after the 660 and slows.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.252/282.90, Now #1
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.369/281.71, Now #3

Gray is back in the traditional Service Central colors and Pedregon is flying STP livery this weekend.

Two great tune up runs for the pair and Pedregon moves into the current #1 position for now.

Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.916 sec., 330ft-2.379, 660ft-3.413/248.80 mph.
Johnny Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.932 sec., 330ft-2.439, 660ft-3.502/240.34 mph.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.248/293.09, Now #1
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 5.400/132.44, Now #8

A pair of Mustangs to the line.

Tasca is second off the line and pulling until near mid-track where the car strikes the tires and he lifts.

Wilkerson has the best 60 foot time, so far, and finishes the pass in style with a new #1 position on the ladder.

Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.913 sec., 330ft-2.378, 660ft-3.412/248.71 mph.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.210/292.27, Now #2
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.203/292.90, Now #1

Force finally got his first win of the year last week. Capps has a new NAPA Premium Filter wrap on his Charger this weekend.

This would have been a great race in eliminations with both cars running the best runs of the session. Capps was first off the line and Force was first to the finish line.

Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.890 sec., 330ft-2.335, 660ft-3.370/244.78 mph.
John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.356, 660ft-3.373/252.33 mph.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.294/289.32, Now #6
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.261/286.62, Now #5

We will get a bump spot after these two run. Hagan is back to the DieHard scheme. He is away first and pulls ahead to slide into the top half of the field.

Last weeks runner up, Arend, finishes in the top half too.

Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.388, 660ft-3.443/242.23 mph.
Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.893 sec., 330ft-2.364, 660ft-3.410/245.45 mph.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.773/165.23, Now #13
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.251/286.38, Now #4

Bob Tasca III is on the bump spot at 5.400.

Beckman has a highly visible white and green Valvoline NextGen wrap on the car. Very distinctive. Pedregon remains in the bright red Snap-On colors.

Beckman's Charger uses a lot of track getting to the finish line and will have to settle for the #4 spot.

Pedregon was on a good pass until near the 660 lights, when there is smoke from the pipes and he slows.

Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.905 sec., 330ft-2.365, 660ft-3.402/246.44 mph.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.276/259.76, Now #7
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.737/175.66, Now #14

Last pair of the session and Paul Lee is on the bump spot at 4.678.

Team Force's young lions will push for the final #1 spot.

Not this time. After two good leaves, Neff's Mustang strikes the tires right after the 330 light, quickly followed by Height's.

4:47 p.m. John Force is number one with a 4.203 and Gary Densham is on the bump spot at 4.512.

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By David Gerard

SONOMA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 24th annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 4.208/296.11, Now #2; Best prior run: 10.759/67.72, Was #17
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 6.867/92.10, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.773/165.23, Was #15

7:28 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 59 percent, barometer 29.87 inches, adjusted altitude 1,400 feet, track temperature 92 degrees.

Gary Densham is on the bump spot at 4.512.

Nice looking run for Thiel in his newly sponsored William Rast Charger, way up the ladder into the new #2 position on the ladder.

Pedregon was off the line first and had better times until right at the 330 spot, where the slicks start to smoke.

Brian Thiel's incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.363, 660ft-3.381/252.05 mph.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.194/299.73, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.400/132.44, Was #17
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.129/301.94, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.512/205.54, Was #13

Jeff Diehl is on the bump spot at 4.420.

Well, that was a good old drag race, with Densham not only bumping back in, but thundering all the way into the new number one spot. Well done! That's a new career best speed to boot!

Tasca was right behind him going down the track and scores the new #2 spot at almost 300MPH.

Bob Tasca III's incremental times: 60ft-0.896 sec., 330ft-2.346, 660ft-3.373/250.60 mph.
Gary Densham's incremental times: 60ft-0.909 sec., 330ft-2.346, 660ft-3.323/262.23 mph.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.135/305.49, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.737/175.66, Was #16
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.108/308.07, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.315/282.01, Was #12

Melanie Troxel is on the bump spot at 4.315 and looking to move further away.

WOW! Troxel took a lesson from Densham and runs from the bump to the top in just 4.108 seconds. Great 308.070 speed too.

Neff was off the line by just 0.004 and stayed right with Troxel, in what would have been another great race. He moves from outside the field up thirteen positions to the new #3 spot.

Mike Neff's incremental times: 60ft-0.896 sec., 330ft-2.346, 660ft-3.335/260.81 mph.
Melanie Troxel's incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.333, 660ft-3.314/263.10 mph.

Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.187/269.40, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.678/183.05, Was #16
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 8.698/76.27, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.294/289.32, Was #13

Robert Hight is on the bump spot at 4.276 and will be up in the next pair.

Lee gets it to the finish line under power, but is weaving around his lane on the top end. Good pass though and he pushes the Impala into the new #4 spot.

Arend has better numbers initially, but is too stout for the track and starts to spin the slick near the 330 slights.

Paul Lee's incremental times: 60ft-0.909 sec., 330ft-2.360, 660ft-3.346/261.07 mph.
Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.902 sec., 330ft-2.886, 660ft-5.633/078.65 mph.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.182/300.86, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.369/281.71, Was #15
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.084/311.49, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.276/259.76, Was #13

Matt Hagan is on the bump spot at 4.261.

Hight was taking no prisoners and starts the pass with a near best of the session 0.890 sixty foot time. He was off the line first and just pulled steadily ahead of a improving Gray right on down the track.

Gray picks up ten positions and moves well into the field in the new #5 position.

Johnny Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.906 sec., 330ft-2.347, 660ft-3.363/252.71 mph.
Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.890 sec., 330ft-2.327, 660ft-3.299/266.21 mph.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.121/302.96, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.261/286.62, Was #14
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.187/294.95, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.252/282.90, Was #13

Jack Beckman is on the bump spot at 4.251.

...and the hits keep coming!

A resurgent Pedregon chases Hagen down the track, as they leave the line within 0.001 of each other. He misses the top half of the field by just 0.005 on a wandering pass that had the car close to the wall at the finish line and puffing smoke out the pipes. No oil though.

Hagan took his small starting line advantage and parlayed it into a near top of the pack number three pass.

Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.892 sec., 330ft-2.329, 660ft-3.315/260.06 mph.
Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.901 sec., 330ft-2.351, 660ft-3.362/253.42 mph.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.115/308.99, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.251/286.38, Was #14
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.114/303.37, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.248/293.09, Was #13

Ron Capps is on the bump spot at 4.210.

8:02 p.m. We had a "setting sun" delay, as the right lane driver has to look right into the sun while staging at this time of day.

It was well worth the wait, as the cars are just 0.001 difference in ET and take over the new #4 and #5 spot.

Wilkerson "won" the pass with a better RT and held off a charging Beckman.

Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.897 sec., 330ft-2.329, 660ft-3.320/260.06 mph.
Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.910 sec., 330ft-2.340, 660ft-3.314/263.41 mph.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.060/311.99, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.203/292.90, Was #12
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.107/305.77, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.210/292.27, Was #14

Force started the session in number one and finds himself on the bump with Capps able to move him out of the field.

...and Guido and Force show why they are the guys to be feared with a near picture picture perfect pass way up into the Four Oh's at almost three hundred and twelve miles an hour. That's a new track ET and Speed record. He has a little drama in the lights, as first a panel and then the entire parachute blows off the car. Its uphill after the finish line and Force is able to stop the Mustang right at the beginning of the sand trap.

Capps started the run outside the field and two positions below Force. He ends up in the field and still two positions below him. Great passes a pair.

John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.886 sec., 330ft-2.303, 660ft-3.274/265.74 mph.
Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.898 sec., 330ft-2.322, 660ft-3.307/261.37 mph.

8:12 p.m. Paul Lee is on the bump spot at 4.187.

Round 3 Qualifying

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By David Gerard

SONOMA, Calif. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 24th annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 5.519/140.28, Now #14; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 4.324/288.70, Now #13; No Prior Run

1:03 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 59 percent, barometer 29.95 inches, adjusted altitude 1,290 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.

In the seventeen car field, one car will be going home at the end of today.

Arend is usually in the field by now and this time won't again, as the Solara is way loose and spins the tires too much to continue.

Diehl picks up almost a tenth to stay off the bottom of the ladder.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.449/245.23, Now #15; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 4.377/285.35, Now #14; No Prior Run

Pedregon is on the bottom of the ladder and struggles getting to the finish line again, with traction issues near the 660 mark.

Thiel struggles too and slows from yesterday's best times to take over the #14 spot for now.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.364/254.76, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.187/294.95, Was #11
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.259/295.14, Now #13; No Prior Run

Tasca now sits on the bottom of the ladder are will set the bump spot for the session.

He gets to the finish line with most of the cylinders firing. It wasn't pretty, but he is in the field for now.

Pedregon slows with dropped cylinders and stays #11.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.995/155.65, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.129/301.94, Was #8
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.728/178.52, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.182/300.86, Was #10

Cruz Pedregon is on the bump spot at 4.449 and has already run.

They leave almost together and run side by side to near the 330 foot lights, where one right after the other kicks the tires loose. They will stay number 8 and number 10.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.207/295.34, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.114/303.37, Was #5
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.222/296.31, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.135/305.49, Was #9

Not too bad for the heat of the day, with almost identical leaves and a side by side pass right to the finish line.

Wilkerson takes about a car length lead and will stay #5.

No apparent problems for Neff, as he slows a little too.

Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.918 sec., 330ft-2.372, 660ft-3.387/254.95 mph.
Mike Neff's incremental times: 60ft-0.917 sec., 330ft-2.386, 660ft-3.399/255.73 mph.

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.390/220.91, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.108/308.07, Was #4
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.151/299.00, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.121/302.96, Was #7

Hagan flies off the line an runs the quickest pass of the session to stay # 7, just missing three hundred MPH.

Troxel's Solara stays close until after the 660 lights, when the cars slows.

Melanie Troxel's incremental times: 60ft-0.906 sec., 330ft-2.363, 660ft-3.399/241.24 mph.
Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.896 sec., 330ft-2.333, 660ft-3.336/256.94 mph.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.202/294.43, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.107/305.77, Was #3
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.233/291.07, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.115/308.99, Was #6

Two of the Team Schumacher Funny Cars to the line.

Beckman gets a small lead over Capps at the green and they run side by side all the way to the finish line. Capps gets the advantage on the top end to stay #3. Beckman will stay #6.

Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.896 sec., 330ft-2.343, 660ft-3.369/247.38 mph.
Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.905 sec., 330ft-2.360, 660ft-3.391/247.11 mph.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.158/305.49, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.084/311.49, Was #2
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.232/291.38, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.060/311.99, Was #1

Force set the track speed and ET records in last nights session, but will need some big power to match Hagan's times.

It's the Prock Rocket that will come within 0.007 of Hagan. Hight has the advantage all the way down the track and looks great for the conditions.

Nice pass for Force, but no big top end charge.

Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.892 sec., 330ft-2.350, 660ft-3.356/258.02 mph.
John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.362, 660ft-3.392/248.34 mph.

1:33 p.m. Cruz Pedregon is on the bump spot at 4.449.

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By David Gerard

SONOMA, Calif. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 24th annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Brian Thiel No Time, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.377/285.35, Was #15

3:17 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 54 percent, barometer 29.92 inches, adjusted altitude 1,630 feet, track temperature 116 degrees.

Cruz Pedregon is on the bump spot at 4.449. Arend is #17.

Well, that wasn't what they planned. Thiel hits the throttle, runs a soft 1.081 sixty foot time, shakes hard, and clicks it off. The car coasts over to the wall and stops on the track before the 660 lights.

[Diehl pulls his car out of line, as he can't be bumped]
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.439/277.43, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.519/140.28, Was #17

You talk about deceiving! Arend looked to be on a big time pass, but just barely bumps into the field by 0.010 with Pedregon yet to run.

Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.937 sec., 330ft-2.452, 660ft-3.551/231.28 mph.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.260/268.81, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.259/295.14, Was #13
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.164/304.39, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.449/245.23, Was #17

Pedregon finally takes the Solara to the finish line under power and is able to move all the way up into the current #10 spot with a straight and clean pass. Arend was in the semi-finals last week and doesn't qualify this week. Hard!

Brian Thiel ends on the bump spot at 4.377.

Tasca makes a strong pass for the conditions, basically repeating his prior run.

Bob Tasca III's incremental times: 60ft-0.922 sec., 330ft-2.394, 660ft-3.413/253.42 mph.
Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.903 sec., 330ft-2.348, 660ft-3.355/256.41 mph.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.279/278.69, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.182/300.86, Was #11
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.220/295.21, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.187/294.95, Was #12

Two clean passes without drama. They are both ready for tomorrow.

Johnny Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.913 sec., 330ft-2.394, 660ft-3.426/248.29 mph.
Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.909 sec., 330ft-2.366, 660ft-3.391/250.92 mph.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.466/204.73, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.135/305.49, Was #9
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.237/284.15, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.114/303.37, Was #5

Neff gets down track and starts to drop cylinders near the 660 lights and the car starts to move around a lot. He lifts and slows.

Wilkerson is consistent this weekend and makes a nice looking run with another four twenty pass.

Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.916 sec., 330ft-2.366, 660ft-3.386/248.89 mph.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.161/298.73, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.121/302.96, Was #7
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 7.790/74.54, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.108/308.07, Was #4

Troxel has had a good weekend with three good passes so far. Not this time, as the tires are up in smoke before the 330 lights.

Hagan has the tune up for the current conditions and makes a terrific pass into the mid-four teens.

Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.897 sec., 330ft-2.338, 660ft-3.344/255.87 mph.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.205/296.89, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.115/308.99, Was #6
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.156/302.01, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.107/305.77, Was #3

Capps steps up the pace and improves over his team mate, Hagan, with a clean pass to the finish line.

Beckman, the other team mate, leaves first and runs well too. He is right behind him in the lights.

Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.898 sec., 330ft-2.352, 660ft-3.375/247.75 mph.
