Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By David Gerard

KENT, Wash. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 24th annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 7.634/102.90, Now #2
Right Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 5.182/147.02, Now #1

2:29 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 69 degrees, relative humidity 60 percent, barometer 29.76 inches, adjusted altitude 1,477 feet, track temperature 88 degrees. The weather has stayed very consistent today with just a few feet of air density and track temperature.

Eighteen cars are entered.

It's fire and fall back for both drivers. Haddock has a softer leave, but shakes and spins right away and clicks it off.

Diehl gets out to near the 330 lights before having to lift.

Both cars slowly coast to the turnout.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 7.361/99.11, Now #2
Right Lane: Brian Thiel No Time, Now #4

Densham's tune up was stronger than Thiel's off the line and it costs him as the engine goes silent after shake and spin early in the run.

Thiel was on a good looking pass until the left bank header flames started to pulse up and down after the 660 lights. The Charger made a hard move towards the center line with dropped cylinders to finish the pass. He keeps it in his lane and then has a header fire after stopping the car on the track and quickly opening the body up. It's a Official oil down penality and his time won't count.

2:32 P.M. Time out for cleanup after the lights.

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.950/206.73, Now #1
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 7.839/76.42, Now #5

2:45 p.m. Just a small quick cleanup.

No joy here, as both cars are up in smoke by the 330 lights, after tow fair leaves. Lee is done at that point, but Troxel nails the throttle again and then lifts.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 7.411/89.94, Now #5
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 5.435/133.26, Now #3

Pedregon is flying a neat green Charter Communications wrap this weekend.

They leave close together and have similar sixtyfoot times. Pedregon is in trouble first before the 330 lights and then Gray's Service Central Charger starts to spin the tires shortly after that..

There is oil on the track in Gray's lane, but he still has a "Get Out of Jail Free" card and keeps his ET and MPH.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.205/298.87, Now #1
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 7.597/77.20, Now #7

Wilkerson had time to make changes after watching the early broken passes and thunders right on down the track and into the top spot with out first four second pass of the session.

Tasca's Mustang has slower incremental numbers, but can't get to the 330 lights under power.

Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.365, 660ft-3.386/253.61 mph.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 8.056/77.50, Now #11
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.124/304.87, Now #1

Arend missed getting into the seventeen car field last weekend and is looking for revenge.

Force was the number one qualifier and looks to be ensuring a repeat with a great looking pass right up to the top of the ladder. Good incrementals to work from in session two.

Arend is in trouble again with the tires smoking hard near the sixty foot lights. John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.897 sec., 330ft-2.328, 660ft-3.324/260.51 mph.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 7.328/88.71, Now #7
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 7.258/87.61, Now #6

The team mates leave together, smoke the tires together, and shut off together. All before the 330 lights. Paul Lee is on the bump spot at 7.839.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 6.674/110.42, Now #6
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 7.690/86.00, Now #13

Two more failed passes. Just too much power for the track. Only two cars have got much past the 330 lights so far.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 7.469/86.54, Now #12
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.877/154.90, Now #3

Terry Haddock is on the bump spot at 7.634.

Let's see if Guido's John Force tune up will get utilized for these two.

Not so much! Height has similar initial number, but is all done before the 330 lights. Neff gets to near the 660 mark and engine goes BANG with both chutes immediately deploying. Even coasting on to the 1000 foot lights, Neff will still take over the number three qualifying position.

3:15 p.m. John Force is number one at 4.124 and Robert Hight is on the bump spot at 7.469.

Round 2 Qualifying

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By David Gerard

KENT, Wash. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 24th annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 7.165/115.57, Now #9; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.409/295.85, Now #3; Best prior run: 8.056/77.50, Was #17

5:12 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 71 degrees, relative humidity 58 percent, barometer 29.73 inches, adjusted altitude 1,671 feet, track temperature 87 degrees. It's the warmest it has been all day and its still terrific conditions for racing.

Part of Thiel's problem in session one was that the left header came loose from the motor and caught the car on fire.

No joy this time,as he shakes the tires hard and tries to recover to no avail.

Arend had more luck with his pedal slap and runs well enough to move all the way up to the #3 spot for now. That won't last long...

Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 8.756/72.37, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.839/76.42, Was #18
Right Lane: Terry Haddock No Time, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.634/102.90, Was #16

Gary Densham is on the bump spot at 7.361.

Lee falls to tire shake and spin early.

Haddock had a hole out in the left bank at the hit and drives the car hard to the finish line, where there is a bunch of smoke from all of the pipes. [It's oil and he will lose the 4.653 run.]

Terry Haddock's incremental times: 60ft-0.982 sec., 330ft-2.586, 660ft-3.715/223.88 mph.

5:19 p.m. Time for dusting and cleaning in the right lane...

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.201/298.67, Now #2; Best prior run: 7.690/86.00, Was #17
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 8.713/55.84, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.469/86.54, Was #14

These two are usually at the top of the charts, but session one wasn't good to either one of them.

BOY, it's not good for Hight this time either. The car leaves the line with an OK with a 0.894 sixty foot time. He looked to have done a quick pedal slap and then the left rear tire disintegrated in one big piece and a bunch of small ones. It takes the left rear quarter panel and makes very small carbon fiber chunks of it, flying across the lane and into Beckman's.

Hight was on top of the situation immediately and got the AAA Mustang stopped on the track ASAP. He jumped out of the roof hatch and went back to look at the carnage. He told the crowd that they have a back up car for tomorrow.

During all of the excitement going on in the right lane, Beckman flashes down the tough left lane and cards a number two spot on the current ladder without any real drama or incident. Nice clean pass.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 7.237/98.59, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.597/77.20, Was #16
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 6.929/96.69, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.411/89.94, Was #14

5:46 p.m. ... and we are back!

Another two broken passes. They left together at the green and had similar 60 foot times and the they both struck the tires, clicked off the engine, coasted for a while, and stopped next to each other on the track. Not the kind of side by side pass they were looking for!

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 5.115/267.43, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.258/87.61, Was #13
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 5.634/126.06, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.361/99.11, Was #15

Bob Tasca III is on the bump spot at 7.237.

Hagan had a strong 0.886 sixty foot time and was up in smoke before the 330 lights. He takes the time necessary to gather it back up and nails the throttle again to move up the ladder to the new #7 spot.

Densham got a little further than Hagan initially, but didn't attempt a second try. He move five spots up the ladder to #10 for now.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 7.527/79.21, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.435/133.26, Was #9
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 7.253/88.45, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.328/88.71, Was #15

Instant replay for 200 feet, except neither car hit it again. Just too much power for the track conditions.

Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 6.792/105.27, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.674/110.42, Was #11

Diehl sits out this session, so Pedregon will make a single pass. His brother, Tony Pedregon is on the bump spot at 6.929.

Nope! Same results. Hard leave and then shake and spin. He'll stay #11 for now.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.300/241.07, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.877/154.90, Was #5
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 6.628/98.36, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.950/206.73, Was #6

Neff drives through the shake and spin zone and the then has the chute come out under power right after the 330 lights. He has to lift and still runs a stout 4.300, good enough for the current #4 spot That was just weird! Quote: " I hate when that happens."

Troxel had a quicker sixty foot time and then shakes and spins after the sixty foot lights. to stay #6.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 7.237/82.34, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.124/304.87, Was #1
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.260/152.40, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.205/298.87, Was #3

How many ways can you say shake and smoke? Not enough, as these two follow most of the Funny Cars in this session and have to give up early.

Force was away first and had a much better sixty foot time. Too bad the track wasn't there, as the slicks were quickly spinning and smoking.

Wilkerson was a little more conservative off the line and got a little further down the track before joining the club.

6:04 p.m. Tony Pedregon is on the bump spot at 6.929.

Round 3 Qualifying

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By David Gerard

KENT, Wash. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 24th annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 7.485/92.74, Now #13; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 4.285/291.07, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.182/147.02, Was #8

12:07 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 62 percent, barometer 29.73 inches, adjusted altitude 1,591 feet, track temperature 84 degrees.

John Force is number one at 4.124 and we will set a sixteen car bump spot by the end of the session with only eighteen Funny Cars in attendance.

Diehl tiptoes through the tough starting line area and motors on down the track into the top four for now. Nice clean pass!

Haddock strikes the tires before the 330 and lifts.

Jeff Diehl's incremental times: 60ft-0.924 sec., 330ft-2.408, 660ft-3.446/248.48 mph.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.137/306.26, Now #2; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 7.574/82.60, Now #15; No Prior Run

Hight is back with a replacement car that is reported to be all new, after yesterday's big event.

Looks like Prock has a handle on the track and Hight makes a terrific pass into the current #2 spot with top speed of the meet. Way to start it out right!

Lee can't get past the dreaded 100-200 foot mark with out shaking and spinning.

Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.903 sec., 330ft-2.337, 660ft-3.336/258.62 mph.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.260/293.73, Now #6; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.159/303.03, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.435/133.26, Was #10

Team Schumacher to the line.

Terrific pass for Gray well into the top half of the field in the new #3 position.

Capps was with Gray on the track until near the 660, but couldn't match the pace to the finish line. He's now #6.

Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.371, 660ft-3.417/243.46 mph.
Johnny Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.920 sec., 330ft-2.348, 660ft-3.348/255.77 mph.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.214/296.63, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.929/96.69, Was #14
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.623/282.42, Now #11; No Prior Run

Paul Lee is on the bump spot at 7.574.

Tasca is quickly done in the right lane after at least one pedal slap, but Pedregon powers on down the track and into the new #6 spot on a straight pass.

Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.374, 660ft-3.395/252.90 mph.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.181/300.73, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.674/110.42, Was #15
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.115/308.78, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.124/304.87, Was #1

Terry Haddock is on the bump spot at 7.485. Force has been to all of the prior races here and has keep the top spot, so far, but Pedregon has slid down to the #15 spot.

Force shows that there is nothing wrong with the right lane and thunders right down the center of the lane to move his #1 performance advantage even further away, improving on both his ET and MPH.

Pedregon has the tune up and moves 11 spot up the ladder on a much better pass.

Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.901 sec., 330ft-2.348, 660ft-3.365/253.80 mph.
John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.898 sec., 330ft-2.337, 660ft-3.324/262.79 mph.

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.238/303.30, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.950/206.73, Was #13
Right Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 4.322/266.64, Now #12; No Prior Run

Thiel is the last car that can bump into the field in this session.

The In-N-Out Solara is a little loose off the line and Troxel does a quick throttle pump and recovers quickly. The car pulls hard after that and moves into the top half of the field.

Thiel makes good on his needs and makes a strong pass into the new #12 position.

Melanie Troxel's incremental times: 60ft-0.893 sec., 330ft-2.403, 660ft-3.424/251.72 mph.
Brian Thiel's incremental times: 60ft-0.953 sec., 330ft-2.434, 660ft-3.466/248.80 mph.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.230/287.23, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.634/126.06, Was #16
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.155/301.74, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.115/267.43, Was #15

Gary Densham is on the bump spot at 5.634.

Hagan has the tune up this time and gets away first. He just pulls steadily ahead on a clean pass to move off the bottom of the ladder to near the top.

Densham makes a greatly improved run and just misses the top half of the field.

Gary Densham's incremental times: 60ft-0.902 sec., 330ft-2.362, 660ft-3.384/248.80 mph.
Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.900 sec., 330ft-2.337, 660ft-3.343/256.02 mph.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.109/303.71, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.205/298.87, Was #7
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.134/307.58, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.300/241.07, Was #13

Bob Tasca III is on the bump spot at 4.623, but is good for the rest of this session.

A pair of Ford Mustangs and a greatly improved Wilkerson gets it all together for a new top ET and narrowly misses the the speed mark.

The parachutes stay in until the finish line this time and Neff runs right behind Wilkerson into the new #3 spot on a strong pass.

Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.908 sec., 330ft-2.328, 660ft-3.306/261.83 mph.
Mike Neff's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.355, 660ft-3.339/263.46 mph.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.195/301.07, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.409/295.85, Was #15
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.357/229.74, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.201/298.67, Was #8

Last pair of the session and its spectacular...

Beckman is away first and has the Charger move towards the wall shortly after the launch. A little pedal job straightens out the car, but upsets the engine. He stays after it and there is heavy smoke from the engine right after the 660 lights and on down past the centerline. he pulls the car over towards the wall and its enveloped in a cloud of smoke. There is oil on the track, but he has a full "Freebie" to retain his times.

Arend finally gets a full pass and its a good one. He chases Beckman for a while and then motors on by and advances into the top half of the field in the number eight position, pushing Beckman down a spot to #9.

Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.903 sec., 330ft-2.378, 660ft-3.386/257.24 mph.
Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.914 sec., 330ft-2.370, 660ft-3.398/243.50 mph.

12:41 p.m. Tim Wilkerson is our new #1 at 4.109 and Bob Tasca III is on the bump spot at 4.623.

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By David Gerard

KENT, Wash. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 24th annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 6.649/81.68, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.574/82.60, Was #18
Right Lane: Terry Haddock No Time, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.485/92.74, Was #17

2:47 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 72 degrees, relative humidity 56 percent, barometer 29.73 inches, adjusted altitude 1,738 feet, track temperature 87 degrees.

We have had some great times in PS and TF! Bob Tasca III is on the bump spot at 4.623.

Neither of these two are in the show and it's now or never!

That sets the field, as Haddock gets a 3/4 pass into the high fours, but not good enough to qualify. He will lose his time and speed, as well as ten Championship points and $2000 for oil in his lane down track. Ouch!

Lee is up in smoke right after the 330 lights. He pumps, but is dropping cylinders and gives it up. The oil penality by Haddock moves him into the first alternate position.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.205/299.86, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.623/282.42, Was #16
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.201/293.98, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.260/293.73, Was #13

3:02 p.m. ...and we are back to qualifying. The track temp is now the highest of the weekend at 94 degrees.

Tasca can push the envelope now that he is assured a position in the field. Both cars are usually well into the top half of the field at this point, but not this weekend.

Both cars make a go of it and power up the ladder to the new #10 and #11 positions. Tasca leaves first and has better incrementals down low, but Capps gets ahead on the top end by just 0.004 to take the better position on the ladder.

Bob Tasca III's incremental times: 60ft-0.903 sec., 330ft-2.374, 660ft-3.389/255.63 mph.
Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.912 sec., 330ft-2.356, 660ft-3.370/251.39 mph.

Left Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 7.905/85.63, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.322/266.64, Was #16
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 8.562/79.82, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.238/303.30, Was #14

Two more smokers, as they have 0.919 and 0.918 sixty foot times to start the pass.

Neither car can get to the 330 under power, with Thiel pumping and getting the car way loose and sideways.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 6.552/105.09, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.201/298.67, Was #9
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.190/295.46, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.214/296.63, Was #12

Diehl and Densham were suppose to run in this slot, but they both have pulled out of the line and gone back to the pits.

Pedregon has a 0.919 time like the prior two, but keeps the tires stuck and flies down the track and into the top half of the field on a clean pass.

No joy for Beckman, as the Aaron's Charger is up in smoke right after the sixty foot lights.

Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.919 sec., 330ft-2.374, 660ft-3.378/257.38 mph.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.145/297.94, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.159/303.03, Was #6
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.480/202.30, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.195/301.07, Was #9

Gray leaves hard and makes the best run of the session to move one spot up the ladder into the new #5 spot.

Arend was off the line first, but starts to slow after the 660 lights to stay #9.

Johnny Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.335, 660ft-3.327/256.11 mph.
Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.915 sec., 330ft-2.382, 660ft-3.412/239.78 mph.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.117/301.47, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.155/301.74, Was #6
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.205/292.65, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.181/300.73, Was #7

Hagan adds to the Team Schumacher power trust with another strong pass three spots up the ladder to number three with the best run of the round so far.

Pedregon gets from A to B without drama, but can't improve.

Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.887 sec., 330ft-2.318, 660ft-3.307/258.71 mph.
Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.910 sec., 330ft-2.355, 660ft-3.374/251.06 mph.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 8.579/74.51, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.134/307.58, Was #4
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.125/305.84, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.137/306.26, Was #5

Height is off the line first and has the better incrementals until Neff is off the throttle just before the 330 lights. He continues to improve with his new car and moves around Neff into the final #4 position in qualifying. Nice run!

Mike Neff's incremental times: 60ft-0.914 sec., 330ft-2.828, 660ft-5.474/078.66 mph.
Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.901 sec., 330ft-2.334, 660ft-3.326/260.16 mph.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.117/308.85, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.115/308.78, Was #2
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 6.613/103.88, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.109/303.71, Was #1

This will wrap up Professional qualifying for the weekend and its all eliminations for everyone after this.

Both cars are two out of three on good runs, but Wilkerson's Levi, Ray, and Shoup Mustang strikes the tires in that tough spot right before the 330 lights.

Force makes it three out of four, matching Hagan's ET performance with a much better speed. He will stay #2 going into tomorrow's eliminations.

John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.895 sec., 330ft-2.337, 660ft-3.324/262.08 mph.
Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.498, 660ft-4.402/111.98 mph.

3:27 p.m. Brian Thiel is on the bump spot at 4.322.
