Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 42nd annual NHRA SuperNationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 5.272/140.05, Now #1
Right Lane: Mike Smith Runs 6.561/100.73, Now #2

4:51 p.m. - Weather conditions: air temperature 81 degrees, relative humidity 26 percent, barometer 29.92 inches, adjusted altitude 1,841 feet, track temperature 124 degrees.

Smith shook the tires and clicked it off before he reached mid track. Haddock got out about 100 feet, then started smoking the rear tires. He shut down his car. shortly afterward.

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 7.799/79.27, Now #4
Right Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.280/281.01, Now #1

Troxel smoked the rear tires at a hundred feet and shut down. Bode went down the middle of his lane.

Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.168/294.56, Now #1
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.976/155.22, Now #3

Lee took his car down the groove. Pedregon had a nice pass going to mid track, when he started trailing some smoke and slowed.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson No Time, Now #4
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.253/288.39, Now #2

Wilkerson's car started trailing smoke at mid track and slowed. Head took his Toyota down the groove. Wilkerson oiled the track so his 4.603 second ET will not count.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.942/154.49, Now #5
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 5.995/115.63, Now #8

Both drivers smoked the tires at mid track, and both backed off the throttle.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.145/302.89, Now #1
Right Lane: John Force Runs 5.136/180.26, Now #8

Force smoked the tires at mid track. he stayed on the throttle and the back end of his car started swinging from side to side. Tasca took his car straight down the groove into the top spot in the order.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.741/172.12, Now #6
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 6.979/85.57, Now #13

More tire smoke from this pair of drivers. Hagan went up in smoke at 330 feet, Arend went up in smoke a hundred feet or so later.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.114/304.74, Now #1
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.153/302.01, Now #3

Both drivers went right down the groove. Pedregon moved into the top spot in the order for now, Hight is number three.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.218/292.77, Now #5
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 5.108/145.83, Now #12

Neff's car started trailing smoke at mid track. Beckman's car let out a lot of smoke as he crossed the finish line.

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 42nd annual NHRA SuperNationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: John Smith Runs 9.538/80.66, Now #19; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.094/306.33, Now #1; No Prior Run

Smith started to smoke the tires and clicked it off...Wilkerson launched hard and keep the big Goodyears hooked up to go to the number one spot. Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.901 sec., 330ft-2.315, 660ft-3.294/261.27 mph.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.300/214.52, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.979/85.57, Was #17
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.135/307.37, Now #3; Best prior run: 7.799/79.27, Was #18

Hagan was on a good pass until right in the lights when it banged the blower. Troxel with a great pass to go to the number three spot. Melanie Troxel's incremental times: 60ft-0.896 sec., 330ft-2.339, 660ft-3.334/258.02 mph.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 9.036/80.78, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.995/115.63, Was #17
Right Lane: Terry Haddock No Time, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.272/140.05, Was #16

Gray is up in smoke right off the starting line and clicks it off. Haddock with problems right off the starting line and came to a stop about 150 feet out and was pushed back.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 6.449/100.91, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.136/180.26, Was #15
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 8.040/80.57, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.942/154.49, Was #12

Capps is up in smoke about 200 feet out and clicks it off. Force was up in smoke early and pedaled it one time, but didn't get it to hook up.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 6.737/94.54, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.108/145.83, Was #14
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.132/306.40, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.741/172.12, Was #11

Neff is up in smoke early and he clicks it off. Arend launched hard and was straight down the groove. He goes to the number three spot. Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.906 sec., 330ft-2.355, 660ft-3.335/262.18 mph.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.169/292.77, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.169/292.77, Was #8
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 7.431/89.30, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.218/292.77, Was #9

Beckman is up in smoke early and clicks it off...Pedregon was straight down Broadway to get into the show. Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.905 sec., 330ft-2.347, 660ft-3.350/256.75 mph.

Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 9.388/84.82, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.280/281.01, Was #11
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 7.790/61.16, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.168/294.56, Was #7

Bode is up in smoke right off the starting line. Lee is up in smoke and clicks it off.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.137/300.93, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.253/288.39, Was #10
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.113/305.70, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.145/302.89, Was #5

This was a good side-by-side drag race with the header flames shooting high over the roof line. Tasca goes to the number two spot...Bob Tasca III's incremental times: 60ft-0.898 sec., 330ft-2.337, 660ft-3.315/262.74 mph. Head moves up the ladder to the number six spot. Jim Head's incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.344, 660ft-3.335/260.46 mph.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.090/310.34, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.153/302.01, Was #7
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 9.447/82.28, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.114/304.74, Was #3

Pedregon is up in smoke as soon as he hit the throttle...Hight launched hard and keep it hooked up to go to the number one spot. Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.898 sec., 330ft-2.322,

Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 42nd annual NHRA SuperNationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Mike Smith Runs 4.259/288.39, Now #16; No Prior Run

4:33 p.m. - Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 38 percent, barometer 29.96 inches, adjusted altitude 1,543 feet, track temperature 103 degrees.

Smith was disqualified in the third qualifying session this afternoon for crossing the outer boundary. He needed to beat the bump time of 4.280 seconds to make the field for eliminations tomorrow. This time, he took his Funny Car down the groove to make the field. That puts him on bump spot with three drivers waiting to bump him out of the field.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.170/299.46, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.648/283.19, Was #18
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 4.302/275.79, Now #19; Best prior run: 4.881/170.49, Was #19

Neither driver was in the field when they staged their cars. Gray got the run he needed to make the field. Haddock's run looked okay but was not quick enough to make it into the field of 16. Jack Beckman is on the bump spot at 4.218.

Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.198/297.81, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.280/281.01, Was #18
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.115/306.12, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.218/292.77, Was #16

Bode was not in the field and was the only non-qualified driver left to run in this session. Beckman was sitting in the bump spot. Both drivers got took their cars down the groove. Beckman moved into the number seven spot for now, Bode is sitting in the bump spot with John Force outside the field and waiting to make his last qualifying attempt.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.107/307.23, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.209/290.82, Was #17
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 7.406/89.09, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.168/294.56, Was #12

Force came out of the gate strong, with a 0.889 second 60-foot time. He took the car down the groove to make the field and push Bode out. Lee's car launched, the shook the rear tires so he clicked it off early. There are no non-qualified drivers left to run, so the field is set. From here on, they will be running for position.

Left Lane: John Smith Runs 4.209/294.63, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.186/296.31, Was #16
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 5.287/138.36, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.123/302.28, Was #9

Arend had a good run going to 330 feet when the rear tires started to smoke, the back end got loose and he clicked it off. Smith had a good run but was not as quick as he was earlier today.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.669/121.50, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.169/292.77, Was #14
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.108/305.15, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.115/307.51, Was #7

Pedregon's car smoked the tires at 660 feet. Capps had a good run to move up one spot in the order.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.111/306.95, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.156/301.81, Was #12
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.117/302.89, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.113/305.70, Was #7

Neff moved up five spots with a strong run down the middle of his lane. Tasca was not as quick, so he dropped down spot in the qualifying order.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 6.519/101.76, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.142/299.86, Was #12
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 7.736/77.85, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.098/306.12, Was #4

Both drivers got out to about 300 feet when the shut their cars down because of tire shake.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.144/302.35, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.137/300.93, Was #11
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.138/305.63, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.094/306.33, Was #3

Both drivers took their cars down the groove without incident, but neither improved their place in the qualifying order.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 5.120/144.61, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.090/310.34, Was #2
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 5.056/148.56, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.048/302.82, Was #1

Two different drivers, same result as the pair before. Funny Car qualifying is done, with Cruz Pedregon in the top spot for eliminations tomorrow.

11:27 a.m. - Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 52 percent, barometer 29.99 inches, adjusted altitude 1,506 feet, track temperature 102 degrees.
Wilkerson won here in 2008. Pedregon has two wins and one runner up finish here at Englishtown. These two have raced each other 33 times before this, with Pedregon winning 21 of those battles.
Wilkerson got the win with his best run of the weekend so far. Pedregon got about 100 feet off the starting line when he smoked the rear tires and the car got loose. Wilkerson took his Mustang straight down the lane for the win.

(W) Matt Hagan (DieHard Charger) 0.063 4.101 303.64
(L) John Force (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.071 4.128 309.49

Force has won this race four times and been runner up six times, with his last win coming in 1999. He and Hagan have raced each other eight times, with Force having six wins and two losses. Hagan got off the starting line a few thousandths ahead of Force and pulled a car length ahead by the time they crossed the finish line.

(L) John Smith (Paul Smith Racing Monte Carlo) 0.031 15.665 63.44

Pedregon won here in 1995 and 2000. The only time these two have raced each other before this was a Charlotte last year, with Pedregon winning that race. Smith spun and shook the rear tires as soon as he launched and got off the throttle right away. Pedregon had a clean run to take the win and move on to the next round.

(L) Paul Lee (Jim Dunn/Rislone/Bars Leaks Impal 0.079 7.231 69.43

Lee won here in Top Alcohol Funny Car in 2004. He and Troxel have never raced each other in Funny Car competition. Troxel lost in the first round of Pro Mod last night. Lee launched and went up in smoke right away. Troxel had her quickest run of the weekend so far to move on to the next round. She will have lane choice over Matt Hagan.

(W) Johnny Gray (Service Central Charger) 0.112 4.804 274.39
(L) Robert Hight (AAA of So. Cal Mustang) 0.106 4.888 227.80

Hight won both times these two have faced each other in prior events. This time, both drivers shook the rear tires at about 60 feet and pedaled their cars. Hight's car got a more loose than Gray's, so Gray was able to get his car hooked up first and went on to take the win.

(W) Ron Capps (NAPA Charger) 0.088 4.116 306.53
(L) Jim Head (Head Racing Solara) 0.099 4.565 235.51

This was the 29th time Head has competed here at Raceway Park. Capps has eight wins and three losses against Head in prior competition, and won the event here in 2006. Capps took his car down the groove while Head had some tire shake and smoke at mid track. Capps will race Tim Wilkerson in the next round and Wilkerson will have lane choice.

(W) Mike Neff (Ford Drive One Mustang) 0.100 4.079 311.77
(L) Jeff Arend (DHL Solara) 0.065 4.173 300.46

Neff and Arend have raced each other five times before this, with Neff winning three of those matches. Arend got out of the gate first and led this one to 60 feet. Neff got by Arend before they reached 330 feet, then pulled ahead to win by two car lengths. Neff will have lane choice over Gray next time out.

(W) Jack Beckman (Aaron's/Valvoline Charger) 0.095 4.112 308.57
(L) Bob Tasca III (Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustan 0.072 4.139 305.56

Tasca won here in Funny Car last year and won in Top Alcohol Funny Car in 2007. Beckman has won seven of the nine times these two have raced each other before this. Tasca was first off the starting line but Beckman closed the gap right away. They were almost side by side at 660 feet, but when they crossed the finish line, Beckman had the edge. He'll have lane choice over Tony Pedregon in the next round. Jack Beckman's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.002), 330 ft(0.004), 660ft(0.001). MOV: 0.0046 seconds (approximately 2 feet).

1:23 p.m. -- Weather conditions: air temperature 76 degrees, relative humidity 52 percent, barometer 29.96 inches, adjusted altitude 1,717 feet, track temperature 103 degrees. Capps led this one from start to finish. Wilkerson lost any chance of getting the win when he shook the tires hard at 330 feet.

(W) Cruz Pedregon (Snap-On Solara) 0.092 4.074 305.84
(L) Jack Beckman (Aaron's/Valvoline Charger) 0.084 4.179 305.15

Pedregon had an 8-6 record against Beckman at prior events. Beckman was off the line first by 12 thousandths, but Pedregon's car went straight down the groove for the win,

(L) Melanie Troxel (ProCare RX Solara) 0.095 5.011 164.25

Hagan and Troxel have raced each other once before in Funny Car competition. That was in Houston last year and Hagan won that race. Troxel got out to about 330 feet and smoked the tires. She pedaled the car and tried to get the car hooked up to finish the run, but was not able to do so. Hagan got a little out of the groove but stayed with it to get the win. He'll face Cruz Pedregon in the next round and Pedregon will have lane choice.

(W) Mike Neff (Ford Drive One Mustang) 0.117 4.083 313.66
(L) Johnny Gray (Service Central Charger) 0.085 4.149 304.87

The only time these two raced each other before this was at Las Vegas last year. Gray won that race. Gray got off the line first and was ahead at 330 feet. By the time they reached 660 feet, Neff had overtaken Gray for the lead. After that, Neff pulled ahead for the win. He'll have lane choice over caps in round three.

2:50 p.m. - Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 55 percent, barometer 29.94 inches, adjusted altitude 1,650 feet, track temperature 102 degrees. The last time these two raced each other before this was round three of the Gatornationals in March. Pedregon won that race. This was an odd one. Hagan got off the starting line first and was ahead at 60 feet. They were side-by-side at 330 feet,m then Pedregon pulled ahead. Pedregon's chutes came out early, but Hagan's car had started to slow so Pedregon still got the win.

Neff was second coming off the line and trailed at 60 feet. After that, Neff took over and it was his race the rest of the way. he'll have lane choice over Cruz Pedregon in the final round.

4:21 p.m. -- Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 54 percent, barometer 29.92 inches, adjusted altitude 1,689 feet, track temperature 98 degrees. Pedregon's crew changed engines between rounds. Neff had a 0.104 start, Pedregon had a -0.104 reaction time. The ride light start by Pedregon gave Neff the win.

I had heard that this is only the second time John Force lost in the first round in his career. Glad it was to a Mopar!

I'm glad when he loses in any round!!!! He is more like PT Barnum and his side shows!!!! Just get tired of his mouth and the media filming every time he turns around...... JMO.....
