1968 Newport 4dr..hate my distributor...what is a reasonable solution
 

I have a '68 Newport with 383 2bbl and automatic. Constantly messing with the points...thinking my shaft is worn so going to replace the distributor but now is a good time to get something electronic....whats a good way to go with minimal labor? Thanks

The simple way is to buy an electronic dist kit from someone like Summit and install it. Summit supplies eveything needed with easy to follow directions.

i purchased a Mallory distributor and coil from them i'm happy with it.
stay away from pertonix i had a bunch of defective one's from that brand!
But summit replaced them all no problem... Finally bought a Mallory as per my brothers advice and have had no problems with it

simple hook up one wire from ignition hot and no ballast resistor

Mancini has the Mopar conversion kits but available with a Better ECU like the Rev A Nator

Just get the Mopar replacement electronic dist/ECU/harness kit. It's a 383 2V in a 4 door, even the "factory" ECU will be more than adequate.

Make sure it is for a 383 NOT a 440

Might be a little more money but I've run a MSD Ready-To-Run distributor in my J10 (AMC 360) and loved it. A friend of mine is running that dizzy now it his CJ7. Wicked easy to setup, 3 wires IIFC.

Coupled that with a Blaster 2 coil, some 8.5mm spark plug wires and a set of knew champion plugs and that thing never ran so good!

The Mopar orange box is an easy route, which will greatly help.

I ran a Ready to Run MSD DIst , it lasted 2 weeks & cost $400 for a tow bill home / 250 miles .

You can get a reman.. dist. from autozone for 40 bucks with your old core. They work good if you want to run stock. Used them many times no problems.

I had MAJOR points issues when I first got my ’68. I got a MOPAR electronic distributor with the orange box, and NEVER had another problem. That’s the only way to fly. I’ll never run points again, you can mark my words.

You could get a rebuilt electronic at AutoZone or any parts house Ign too for less than $100 ?It will easily handle your stock 383

a tip from an old man . my friends here are VERY right , there ideas are right on. only, after its running get two extra ballast resistors put them in the glove box, at the first time it doesnt start put one of the new ones in. the ballast is a weak point.

i never thought i would leave the electronic ignition behind but with all the replacement parts being made in china they are cheap and fail way more than the originals that was the motivation behind me getting a plug and play ignition system, one hot wire and she runs. also more adjustment.
just before my switch i was having ignition trouble with this kit, used it for years then when i had to replace the box the replacements didn't last long or didn't work at all and the parts guy was so ignorant kept getting the wrong part...6, 8 , bb , sb, 68, 78, 88...:banghead:

too keep it original i would defiantly make the original work but i'm in a different car.

I guess you have to decide which way u want to go. The traditionalist in me says buy a mopar distributor with points. The realist in me says buy a mopar performance electronic system. Depends on what you want? is the car a weekend cruzer or everyday runner? I would say without a doubt stay with mopar parts, but again that is my opinion. Factory parts in the past have always been the better choice for me, proper fit and eaisest instaliation.

Might want to look at a newer stock electrical system and just up grade with over the counter parts. Rock Auto will have all you need. Just look for a stock distributor for a 73 New Port 400 ci. Might wanna look up the wiring for the newer car.
