1979 dodge sportsman motorhome project issues
Hello I just aquired a 23' motorhome with a dodge 440 and a carter t4 4bbl carb.
it hasn't run since 2006. so i drained coolant and oil(oil was thin and watery). replaced with new coolant +oil+filter. put a carb kit and filled with 94 octane.
started and she ran for 20 minutes (lots of black smoke) i played with the 2 screws with the spring but don't really know if i'm doing that right. carb doesn't leak externally. read that rich issue could be over fueling in manifold?
drove it forward 200' then back but as the grade(slight uphill) changed it stalled.then starts but stalls at reverse engagement. pushed it back to the spot. oil pressure was high. so i checked and it was over full? drained about 1 litre. oil was thin and i though it smelt gassy.(could that be fuel pump or carb) put that oil in glass jar will it sperate like water in diesel? this is probally going to be a long project so I will be asking lots of questions and seeking any advise possible.
Thanks and

Could be a faulty fuel pump leaking into the crankcase......
I would flush the fuel system add new fuel and filter... just to make sure it is all clean.... Sounds like the chock might be stuck????

Thanks. ill put a new pump on . can i just disconnect choke levers to see if that solves it or is there another way to check choke? on another idea has anybody heard of radiant heating systems for motorhomes. I'm thinking of running that kinda system . either off alternator or coolant lines
thanks again and

Yes--- On the Choke...
Whats wrong with the heater in it now? Should work on Propane? Propane works great Most of the time?
As for the Radiant System.... Electric would be (Radiant oil) system? And the Coolant would be (Flow threw Coil)?
I have not ran them in Motorhome form. But I have used them in other applications....

Radiant heat in a motor home??????????? Why?????? If you do the coolant type every time you want heat you would have to start the engine and the same goes for the electric type running off the alternator.. Its been nice knowing you!!!!!!!!!!!! The first cold night in a camp ground and you start the engine, you would get shot on site.. Esp.an old beast like that with the high emissions they put out.. Think man.. Like Bob said leave it alone and use the propane.... Bill

as for heating the propane works fine i was just thinking it would be nice to be able to heat the floor while we were driving it and seeing we are doing a full interior teardown we are going to start from scratch . never had one of these before just to old to crawl out of a tent anymore.

Ok...I understand that.... I that case I would run the coolant style and incorporate the blower box into your build. I my self would install the vacuum operated heater hose control valve....
Keep us posted on what you come up with....
