318 swap to 383...

I have a 88 d100 pickup with a 318. I've started rebuilding a 67 383 out of a polara. What all would need to be done to swap out these engines, I'm told that it'll fit. Also what should do about the 727 transmission, change the bellhousing so it will bolt up to the big block or find a big block transmission? Thanks any ad vice is greatly appreciated

727 is auto So you need a Big Block trans IS it a 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive ? All trans linkage swaps directly. Need motor mounts, possible radiator, exhaust Big Block PS mounts Air pullies ??

DO be careful to check heater hose sizes. over the years and diff engines chrysler used diff heater hose sizes. so some times you just get an adapter. but metal ONLY, NO plastic. but dont put it to close to the manifold else you cant get your screwdriver in to turn it. and a lot of the time small block to big block used a diff radiator. DO use brass freeze plugs. on small block and big block when going from a 2 bbl to 4 bbl the cable and brackets are diff. the basic rule is if chrysler put that engine in that body all you need is same parts and brackets. with a big block do use chain or turnbuckle to hold the left side of engine down. on 360 install on 82 250 i got a longer bolt for the left side bracket and a turn buckle that fell into a hole in the frame. was very clean and no chain.

in addition to BB trans and converter........

you will need a rear sump pan and pickup, appropriate exahaust --what you have with the 383 may or may not fit. need big block frame to mount brackets (400 that year?)

why not put a 360 in it? much much easier and with "mild engine" builds you can get just as much out

Ddoger has a point why not build a 450 hp 360
with the saving of parts to do the swap you could build the 360

RacerHog 02-10-2015 10:12 AM

You will need a lot of the parts from the 67 unit.... Big block truck engine and motor mounts also...

I have 900 invested in the 383 for the machine work I had done already. It's past the point of no return now
