360 Engine swap in to a 280ZX

Had this 360 layin around and like any good backyard bandito would do when ya have one layin around and a car with no motor . . . i started the prep for the swap of the SB in to that fun little project car. A Datsun 280ZX.

Long story about the 280 but to make it short-
Bought it in 01 from a local wrecker for 650. Just liked it, knew nothing about it. Fixed it up cherry-Repainted it, wheels n tires, mod'd it several times after falling in love with the car and its culture, then sold it, kid sold it back to me in 09 without the engine and tranny for and ive been lookin for a motor to stuff in there. Nothing better than a Mopar small block that i had layin around anyways.

The way it was after the kid got his paws all over it and took the motor and tranny. . . poor car. . .

I love the body style, I would NEVER sell any of my cars to people I know from the neighborhood or anywhere around here, they like to strip them for parts and tune up their imports. There used to be a Datsun for sale near me but my mom didn't have the cash at the time, back in 03-04 for $500, forget what model it was but it was a bright cherry red.

Good luck on that swap, keep me updated, the mommadukes would love to see what it looks like when done

What Chrysler vehicles can i find the A-833 4-speed manual tranny's in? Been looking and I am not turning up too many results.

haha, well. . .i guess what i should have asked is "where are they most common and are they in something late model that i can easily find in a junkyard?"
So far it looks like between the 70's and 80's its mostly trucks that have the A-833. What other manual tranny's bolt up to the SB360?

1966sportfury 08-03-2010 10:22 PM

couldnt tell you what other trans bolt up, id say if you have the right bell housing then it should be any??
im not sure about most common rigs. but they were also in the 60's cars also seen a lot of mid 60's C bodys with them,
sorry im not much help,
i have a couple of A833 trannys, ans i think i havw a couple of SB bell housings not sure if i wanna sell them, but shipping alone to C.A would probly kill a deal any how.
how many postage stamps on a trannny do u think i would need?

if you want to opt up for a 5speed then an NV3500 out of a 94 to 01 dodge dakota or ram would bolt right up. You can use the 318 5.2 flywheel but would have to get it balanced to the 360 because the 360s are externally balanced unless you find a 360 flywheel then your good to go. the NV3500 is rated at 300 ft/lbs tq. @ 12k lbs. gcvw and the stock 360 puts out around 340 ft/lbs of tq. but a bunch of mopar forums say they use the NV3500 in muscle cars with 400+ horse V8s and didnt have any problems so it should be fine if your gona increase the horsepower on it around that area.
