73 Dart Swinger Hemi swap

So I've been a Chevy guy the majority of my life. I've built a few race cars and have done a ls1 swap into an older vehicle. But I'm brand new to mopar. I just bought a 73 dart swinger with a slant 6 a couple weeks ago and I want to drop a late model Hemi with a 545 trans.

I know I'll have to do some tunnel work for the trans. I just need to know about under hood clearances.

Will I have to modify the k member or is there any way I can make it work?
Will I need a special oil pan for the hemi?
Will headers clear the inner fender wells?
Will the stock hood be able to close? (I want it to look as stock as possible)
Will I need to switch to manual steering?
Also if you have any hints/tips to make the swap easier and quicker any advise Will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry I know that's a lot to ask but I want to get this done in the next six months so I can drive it from San Diego to Chicago after I eas. The original motor runs great itjust really doesn't have the power for that much highway driving.

Thank you RacerBob.
Yea I'm stumped on this too, I used to have an older Chevy racer next door to me and whenever I had a question about chevys I'd just go ask him and he'd help...I'm kinda alone on this one tho

Just a question... Kind of the main one.... Are you going to swap in the 5.7 or the 6.1.... Reason I ask... I know the 2003 Truck 5.7 has a rear Sump oil pan.

And are you going to go the EFI route? or stay with the carb version?

Might look over this one also.... http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/...ight=Hemi+body

Just trying to get the mind set for helping Y'all out if we can... :)

73dartswing 02-19-2015 05:58 PM

I was thinking the 5.7 because they're more readily available. But if a 6.1 would make it easier I'm sure I could find one.

Probably going to go efi. Swapping from efi to carb is a real pain with all the sensors and electronics

Might Give these guys a ring about mounts fitting the Stock K-Member... :)

Thank you Bob. I probably will end up with them despite the price just because I know theywill be cheaper than a new k member and those are the only ones I can find that are made for the stock k member. I might just fab a set myself but idk. I haven't welded in 5 years so I don't trust myself 100% yet

So you might be a little rusty?
Six months is a short window for such a large order. Keep us posted and post up some pics on you progress...
We are here to help if we can...:)

So would swapping an older mopar small block be an easier/more cost friendly option? I know they were offered with a 318 and a 340 option so maybe it would require less with and fit better with one of those

RacerHog 02-23-2015 07:06 AM

I like the Hemi Idea... That would be just plan awesome !!!!!
Not sure if you have seen this video yet??
But this looks like an Cool Build...

Trust me on this one. She will have a hemi exentually. I'm just looking for something a little more convenient right now

Well I didn't get it done before I had to go home. But good news when I did make it back to Chicago I found a great deal on a fresh rebuilt 440 with a 727 for $600
So I swapped that with the Schumacher mounts and had to get a custom driveshaft because the 727 was out of a 4x4 truck and didn't have a slip yoke.
I used b and c body hp manifolds to to fit around the fenders and steering shaft.
I'm at school now and have only been able to work on it during the few days I have between classes but hopefully next break I'll be driving it out here to work on in my upcoming classes

RacerHog 04-26-2016 07:53 PM
