Hi,

My fuel gauge shows half full and then sometimes nothing and sometimes 1/4 full so from reading, I think the first place to start is the fuel sending unit.

Is this located on the side of the gas tank or the top or inside?

i believe it is inside
so to get it it, you have to pull the tank
when you do that, you might as well replace the tank since you have everything off already

Check the float in your tank, it may have gas inside of it. You can test the sending unit by removing it from the tank, and then moving the float up and down while someone is watching the gauge. If the float is bad, try to find a replacement which is made of brass. If you get a new sending unit, make sure it also has a brass float.

Check the ground wire is good on the sending unit they can rot out like everything else and all the bouncing around can make the gauge go weird, simple test is clip a wire on the tank somewhere and the other end to the frame, if it moves then chances are .... you can test the sending unit with a ohm meter if your by yourself, pull it out of the tank and (away from the tank) plug it in and power it up, stick prob in each side of conector and move float up and down, if its good it will show resistance thats how the gauge works.....good luck

Thanks a bunch guys! I appreciate your reply! I took 67 GTX's advice and located a new gas tank, straps and I got a new sending unit. I figure if I am going to go through that much trouble of pulling the tank, I might as well replace everything. Everything cost me about $300 for the parts and they are there way here by bus. Also got new rims, tires and booked it in next week for some interior restoration so I hope everything goes smooth! Thanks again for your help and suggestions guys! I will keep you posted.

I got a new fuel tank and sending unit shipped for approx $325CDN. They just came in today so I have not seen them yet!.... kinda like Christmas!

That is a good deal on the tank & unit and will save you from having problems down the road ..... but my mopar brother do take the time to make sure there is no crap in the tank, if its been sitting it will have dirt in it and thats a bad start to have - I always flush them out with some gas just to be sure, a bitch to take it all apart again for a pluged line - plug the new sending unit in and make sure your gauge is working properly, again why pull it all apart again .... & good luck man

Yeah, please tell us the results....I will be going down this road one day as well. My guage says empty after I use about 6 gallons. As quickly as this car can use gas, I would like an accurate reading of what is left.

Hey 67GTX - Sure, I will let you guys know. I took my car to the shop on Thursday to have some interior work done to it to clean up some odds and ends - restain some plastic moldings, back of seats, sun visors, arm rests, dash etc..... should be done next week. Then I will get the gas tank, sending unit installed with some pics for you. I also just got my new rims and tires in today so looking forward to the final product! I will post details as I get them.

My 1964 Dodge fuel gauge would show a half tank when full for several years. Somewhere I read that it had something to do with the dash lights so today I turned on the parking lights and turned the dash light dimmer high and low and the gas gauge jumped to FULL ... where it should be.
This may save you guys a little . Hey it worked for me.

That is awesome! Gatta love the old cars and the fixes! I just gave it a try for me and no luck but thanks for the info anyway, worth a try!

I am still trying to get some time in the shop to swap out the tank and sending unit. Life is busy at the moment! hehe

Update: I swapped out the fuel tank and fuel sending unit, changed the fuel filter and all went real smooth!

Time - 2 Hours
Difficulty Level - Easy

The only issue I had was that when I went to install the strap to the new tank, it would not reach so I had to make the strap connection hole to the body a bit bigger by a few "mm" and we were good. I included a picture.

It looks like my sending unit float was cracked and rusted and that is why it didn't work. You can tell from the pictures it was in much need of replacement. The gas I drained out also was real rusty.

After all is done, my car runs 100% better, does not hesitate when you push on the gas like it use to and just seems to feel better!

Lift - Dad is a mechanic so I slide the car in when I can to use the lift/tools on weekends and evenings! Makes things easy!

First thing you need to do is check all the fuses and make sure you are getting power to the gauge.

Pull of the wire near the sending unit and ground it, then power on and look, if the needle is moving. do this only for a very short time. Most common the 5 Volt regulator on the dash unit is defective.
