Transmission leaking

Sorry i cant post any pictures. i dont have a camera. Anyway. My tranmission is leaking slow. I am not sure if the pan is a little warped or if its the crappy cork gasket or what. Also one of the bolt holes is stripped out. I thought about using a heli-coil to fix it. but its on the edge and the hole goes all the way through. Its the 904. If anybody can help that would be great. I dont have a lot of money and i am a big Do-it yourselfer. Thanks.

this is all in accordance to the Haynes Repair Manual for 1971-1989 Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler Book No. 30050 series.

Completely clean the suspected area and drive vehicle slowly for a short time as to not cause the wind to cause fluid to travel too far, then park over cardboard or something similair to help pinpoint where leak may be. Common leak areas :
1)Fluid pan - tighten and/or replace gasket if necessary
2)Rear extension- tighten bolts and/or replace seal
3)Filler pipe - replacer rubber oil seal where pipe enters trans. case
4)Trans. fluid lines- tighten fittings and/or replace lines
5)vent pipe- trans is overfilled and/or water in fluid
6)Speedo. connector- replace O-ring where speedo cable enters trans case

Make sure the sealing flange is straight and not bent. No loose or missing bolts. If the gasket itself is leaking, it may be due to high fluid levels or high fluid pressure, meaning the vent pipe may be plugged, pan bolts too tight, sealign surface warped or damaged, gasket no good, or wrong sealing agent applied.

I reccomend picking up this manual at an Auto store like Advanced Auto Parts, only a couple of bucks. Has a lot more to it, such as Bolt Tq'ing specs, and basically a really good complete rebuild guide for All transmissions and engines and Body styles, gives part numbers, and interchangables, etc etc... hopefully that little bit may point you in the right direction...I personally also suspect that stripped bolt hole and some warpage....hopefully you can get it right w/out needing a new pan.

Its not a chrome pan is it? those never mate good enough to prevent leakage.

but if a bolt hole is stripped then I would guess thats where your problem is. I would say get a rubber gasket and see if that leaks, If that doesnt work, I would suggest picking up an old 904 and swapping internals. You can probably find one someone is giving away, and since you have a working tranny already, you just need to swap the internals so the one you get doesnt even have to be working. The case just has to be good.

plus if you have it apart you may as well replace the friction plates and steels with performance ones :D

Go to your local dealership and pick up a reuseable pan gasket for i think its a 44rh. Cant remember for sure. take your pan in and match it up. those gaskets are the shiznit!
