Well the 318 will be cheaper to rebuild than the 383. There are a couple of questions that we would need to have answered first though before we can give you a good answer.

1)What is the vehicle that these motor will be going in to?

2)What tranny are you using behind them?

3)What do you plan on doing with the vehicle?

4)Do you want high performance, stock, or something in between?

Why would the 383 be any more expensive? The cost of parts is not significantly different. Double roller timming chain, oil pump, Gasket set, etc. Should cost similar money. The big block will be worth more done that is for sure.

I built a 383 before and it cost me a pretty penny. The 318 that I have now, hasn't cost me anywhere near as much to build up. Yeah the horse power would be different and the 383 would be worth more when it is done (since there are 318s everywhere), but I think it all depends on what the person plans on using it for.

is it a big block tranny or a small block tranny? or do you have a tranny for each motor?

if you only have one tranny, you'll have to figure out which motor will bolt up to it and go that way. If each motor has its own tranny, then I would go with the 383.

also, you'll have to see what you'll need to do to each motor, work wise, to see which will be cheaper. the 383 may just need a simple rebuild kit, while the 318 may need machine work which will increase the price a good amount.

hi shlep
if its a 904 trans thats a small block only trans if your just wanting to get it driving how bout this call around acouple of wrecking yards and get a running 318 out of a wrecked car non magnum motor seeing thats its a 318 it should be plentiful as 78 said and wouldnt cost that much usually 200 to 300 bucks before they rip it out ask them to hear it run or if there already pulled see if there is some what of a garuntee that it will run ive done this before much cheaper than a rebuild
goodluck
