413 or 383

i might buy a 68 monaco with a 383, or a 62 new yorker with a 413, I know they are about the same thing but is one better with stronger parts??
is the compression the same?? both are 4 barrel motors, and are the 727s the same or are the older like 62 models stronger?

I'm not intimately familiar with the old New Yorkers, but the older transmissions had the wierd old U joint on the rear of the trans, and I cannot for the life of me remember what they are called. Not desirable

Furthermore, the early models had the tapered rear axles, which aside from being weaker, and more difficult to get parts for, require a huge big puller to remove the rear hubs.

I'd buy the '68 if it were me

413 or 383

I never knew that a 413 engine was ever used in a car. What years and models used this engine? I thought it was only used in trucks.I would be interested in learning more.

They certainly did, but not for very long. I can't enumerate the years, but where do you guys thing those HUGE "long ram" manifolds originated?

(There's a certain amount of poignant thoughts in the old Beach Boys tune "Shutdown")

While the all-out 413's were pretty torquey, those manifolds were not known for "top end"

However, they were pretty much the ancestor of the famous 426 max wedge:

383 or 413

go with the 383. parts for the 413 are hard to come by and very expensive compared to the 383. the 413 was used in c-bodies from 1959 through 1965, when they were replace by the 440. the transmission in the 62 is also much more difficult to work with on a swap.

Parts for a 413 aren't scarce up here ! ...and the normal cast pistons give a better compression ratio than the 383.
