440 Six Pack or 426 Hemi

Hello,
In the future I am thinking of purchasing a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T, but I don't know whether to get the 440 Six Pack or the 426 Hemi, I've heard mixed reviews about both.
Thanks

440 six pack

I would probably suggest that you will have a better chance of finding a 440 than a 426. There weren't too many Hemi challengers. The Hemi is awesome and everyone loves a hemi, but the 440 six pack could give it a run for its money and tended to be more street friendly. If I could I would get either / or and never look back. I love Challengers!

well i dont know too much about either i'm still young, but i remember dad always said that the 426 was more for racing and the 440 was more reliable for driving and just plain enjoyment. and yes with little to no work a 440 will give a 426 a run for its money. i have a 440 in my chrysler and i wouldnt change a thing

Pros and cons....

Hemi con.....Its gonna cost you BIG BUCKS if you get an original hemi Challenger.

Hemi pro....Hell, its a Hemi Challenger! Game over.

440 con...Right now I can't think of one. Its all good!

Check out Leno's garage website for some cool video descriptions of his Hemi challenger.

Thanks, I wouldn't be racing much, but I hear a 440 can still hold it's own against the 426 hemi, if it wanted to. I hear they have an amazing top speed too.

well about the top speed thing, i remember a story my granpa told me before he died about my chrysler 300. he said that my great-granpa was in a drag race against a young man in an AAR 'Cuda that would stand up through the first 3 gears...after 3 miles straight worth of racing across the kansas flats my 6000-7000lb car with a stock 440 caught up to this AAR 'Cuda and passed it. i did not believe this story until one day my best friend told me his dad used to have an AAR' Cuda. when i asked to see pictures of this AAR 'Cuda one of them was a picture of the front end up in the air, you could see the front wheel in the air just past the hood of my chrysler 300. i told him that i owned the chrysler in the picture and he didnt believe me, i showed him the car in my garage and he told me the same story about how 4 door boat with a stock 440 beat his AAR 'Cuda in a multi-mile race across kansas...wierd but cool if you ask me

There were only about 2,724 AAR ‘Cudas produced in the six week time period. There were 1,120 produced with manual 4-speed transmissions, and the remaining 1,614 had the automatic 3-speed transmissions.

WOW!!!

M -

Reality check, and a lot of guys aren't going to want to hear this. Unless you plan on going to a lot of car shows (and want the "WOW" factor) or doing a lot of racing, for street use a 440 4V is probably the most reliable (and hassle free) set up to get.

Depending on what you plan on doing to the motor, a worked 440 4V will out perform a stock 6V or even a stock HEMI for a lot less $$$.

Are you planning on buying a challenger that already has one of these setups or are you going to build one of them and then drop it in?

i agree with archer, triple dueces are hard to adjust and hard to maintain that proper adjustment...a 440 with a double pumper holley is an amazing engine, thats what my 440 got on it stock

440 with dual quads is easier to adjust and you will have 8 barrels instead of 6.

value wise, hemi is the better option
while it is true that the 440 is more streetable, this is only in stock form

it all depends on what you want to do with the car.
also, if you arent very handy, the 440 is a better option
hemi's need constant maintence

I would not build, I would probably look for one already ready to go. But I'm not sure.

are you a gear head? either way the word "HEMI" draws just about everyones attention but let me tell you if you want to spend more just for the motor feel free if your looking for a car to draw people attention and horse power all you need is a small block any motor done right will beat the the almighty hemi.
