71 RR 3 SPEED PISTOL GRIP

Last fall I came across a Barn find, in a 1971 Roadrunner. It belongs to an older couple,they aquired it from their son who got into some kind of trouble with the law a few years back. They want to sell it but havent really tried to yet. He claims it is a numbers matching car but I havent checked all that out yet. Its a pretty good shape as he says his son "restored" it several years ago. My main question involves the tranny- it is a 383hp with a 3 speed on the floor. Hemi orange(tor red) with front disc brakes. Buckets no console. how many 71's would have a 3 spd pistol grip? I dont imagine that this would be that desireable but curious to the rarity? Thanks

Roadrunner in a Barn.

I'd think if the car is anywhere near stock and not a screwed up with unconventional modifications and the fender tag is present and it makes sense and matches the equipment, and it runs. The car should be worth getting, especially if for under $5000.

Does it compare to others you have seen? Does it appear to have had a console? How about the three speed? Is it a factory shifter?

This car sounds extremely interesting. What is the VIN number? Engine code?

Does it have a heater or is it missing? How about the radiator, does it look smaller or maybe made of alluminum? What wheels are on it? Are the inner finders missing? Special headers? Is the body window glass real thin?

Its in pretty good shape- body paint interior all decent. But been sitting in barn a couple years. He did start it for me.It doesnt look like it ever had a console. he has the fender tag. It was last fall when I saw it. He says it s number matching (except he said he did change out the rear end because it was making a noise)but I didnt check all the #'s yet. I got all the numbers off the trim tag.traverse stripe,buckets,light pkg,decor pkg,disc brakes,3 sp manual,etc. BUT he wants 15000.00
for it. He says hes firm. It looks like a factory pistol grip to me. VIN is RM23N1G110081, Heater is there-radiator stock-inner fenders fine. Body glass thin??? No headers. Roger

I also found a 3 speed 71 roadrunner blue exterior and interior (numbers matching 383 project), does anyone knows if these 3-speed cars are any rare?

Thanks!
Greetings Tom

yeah they are up there in there rareity how many made dont really know but heres a little somthing from a different site
The standard manual trans in 1971 was indeed a 3 speed unit. Bucket seats with no console would not be out of the question for an "economy" muscle car. If you can find the build sheet you can verify whether or not the car came with a console. Its a good find with or without a console.

3 speed on the forest carpet floor.

This could be the next hot car in the collector market.

The standard, normally not taken care, because they weren't special cars, are usually only appreciated in dollars signs when most of the original equipped ones are all gone.

Try to get your fingers on that car and store it away for a rainy day.

I don't think the 3 speed trannys ever came with a pistol grip. The standard 3 speed shifter was a ball on top only. If it's a pistol grip, the shifter was probably changed.

Huh? The VIN is fine.... RM23N1G110081 decodes to:
RM23 = Road Runner
N = 383 1-4barrel HP
1 = 71 model year
G = St Louis MO assembly plant
110081 = sequence number
