88 w150

thinking about getting a 88 w150. need some help. heres the issue with it... starts and runs...sometimes for 5 seconds sometimes 30 minutes...then no fuel. sits for 5 minutes and starts back up. new filter and pump. its fuel injected. can anyone help me out?

You said its a new pump, speaking from experience, "new" dont mean nuthin'! Most Autozones RENT a great fuel injection pressure testing kit. about $150 deposit, free rental, its a great tool and has all the adaptors and the recommended fuel pressure for all cars. Harbor freight also sells a cheaper one. I'd start with the pressure first since the rental is free. Certain sensors can also fail when they warm-up and cause the fuel pump to turn off when the cpu doesnt receive their signal. RE; Crank Position Sensor. If the truck is a good deal to begin with, then I say go for it. But I would use the problems to my advantage for negotiating the price. "Gee,,I dont know, computer stuff gets expensive." Cpu and sensor problems scare alot of folks. But tests for them are easy and in the manual.

I relay can be part of this too. The motor is probably TBI (throttle body injected) correct?

How is the rest of the truck? Frame, body, axles, etc.?

I had a buddy with a new ford super duty, same thing was happening. He went through a lot of parts for it and a lot of money and a LOT of headache! Finally he the dealership decided to take the gas tank out and check inside. They found a plastic bag inside. Makes seance cause the bag would go to the bottom of the tank when it was sitting and then work it's way to the pickup when it was running cut the fuel and shut it down. Some times it would take 5 min some times it would take 30 min. Just thought I'd share.

yes it is tbi. the guy that has the truck says he checked fuel pressure and its fine until it quits. the truck is in so-so condition....has new floor boards...box is shot....has plow and new tires. he wants $1500.00 and dont seem to want to negotiate. also forgot to mention before that it runs if you squirt gas into throttle body.

I'm pretty sure that you will need a carb/intake, some brackets for the kickdown linkage and I'm not to sure about the wiring. You'll need an inline fuel regulator because of the fuel pump.

$1500 is a little high for a truck that doesn't stay running and the box (I assume you mean bed) is gone.

One question you need to ask yourself is why you need/want a truck like this. I'm not saying not to get it but maybe hold out for something better down the road. Then again I have seen friends buy POS vehicles that didn't run and turns out the PO just did not install the spark plug wires in the proper location.

I agree with tim, thats alot of cash for something that old, and the beds trash, according to your post. Id look somewhere else. You can change it to carb. but then youll have to change the rest of the system too fuel , ignition, the electric pump puts out average 30 psi. youd over power the carb continually flooding it out. then the ecm runs the ign. witha caarb the o2 sensor would send weird signals to teh ecm having it adjust the timing making it run leaner then needed or richer, alot of money t totally convert it over, think real hard before you jump.
