Connecting rods
So recently I was on eBay and I stumbled across a full set of used aluminum Hemi rods from an alcohol motor. The description says that they came out of a spare motor and are slightly used and have no cracks or other defects, and they look really good in the pictures. With only 10 hours left they were at $31.99! So why are they at such a cheap price with just 10 hours left?

I'll tell ya. It's an auction. A LOT can happen in the last few milliseconds!!!
|
Well I know that but usually there are a bunch of eager people who bid items way up before the auction is even close to ending. Since I've been an eBay member I've just never seen something worth that much still at that low of a price at the last hours of the auction and that's why I was so amazed. I was wondering if maybe used alcohol rods are easy to find since teams rebuild engines so much or whether they are still worth a lot.

You got a eggbay link?

Used aluminum rods are only good for lamp stands. BME rods are good for about 250 passes. Others maybe 100. Stay away, they are like the plague!
|
If you are building a motor that needs aluminum rods. It would be foolish to buy a used unknown set. They could have 100 runs left or maybe just one !!! I don't think they should ever be used in a street motor

Thanks for the input. I've never really looked into aluminum rods until now.

I saw that after the auction. There's brand new aluminum big block chevy rods going for 150-200. I'm thinking about going with either some H-beam rods from 440Source or Eagle for my 440. What do you guys think?
Have a look at Hughes Engines site also. Peter |
