Do you think I can take him? Chevy vs Mopar

Alright so last time I was asking for a few speed tips. This is all in preparation for an upcoming grudge match this weekend against my devout chevy buddy. I'd just like to know what you guys think.

My car:
1970 challenger r/t
440 six pack, stock
727 auto
Dana 4:10 rear
msd ignition
headers+full exhaust
Best time last time: 15.214 (very first time on a track- no, im not using that as some fabricated excuse)

His car:
1978 Chevy Malibu
built 350
th350 tranny
3.90? rear
Best time last time: 14.230

Note: I have since added a 2500 stall and shift kit to the trans, traction bars, M/T et slicks, and will be losening up my front swaybar this time. The chevy remains the same. Also, my last 60-foot times were terible- I was spinning so bad from the start that you could actually see the smoke. With all this considered, what do you guys think? Could I take 'em?

I just realized something. Conviently, we both made our best runs on the same timeslip. His trap speed was 91.58 mph, and mine was 90.25 mph. Thats right, he only trapped 1.33 mph faster than I did! Also, my e.t was 15.214, to his e.t. of 14.230. He beat me by .984- 9 tenths of a second. What this shows me is he wasn't much faster than me; he just got there in a shorter amount of time. What could cause this offset? Simple- I was wasting my time spinning my tires and waiting for them to hook up. I think if I can get the Mickeys to hook from the start, i'll have him.

you should be able to take him. It might be close but if you can get everything to work together, then it should be no prbolem.

BuckNeccid 04-30-2009 02:37 AM

Good luck, let us know how it works out. I agree with 78 and you.... You may take him, it's gonna be close, and watch the slippage. Practice as much as you can LEAVING, before the race, less attention on winning, get off the line fast and without slippage. Most races are won by who leaves first.

Thanks 78 and Buck. I'll let you know how it goes. Conveniently, he won't be there to see my shakedown passes- he'll be on his way to the track after work. :)

Red Devil 04-30-2009 11:04 AM

all about reaction time there, if you tree him you can win easy

67 GTX 05-01-2009 03:12 PM

agreed
make sure you hook, and you got him

pjmopar 05-01-2009 03:23 PM

Yup ,leave on the last yellow light and watch him in your rear view mirror

Well? How did it go?

MrMopowered 05-04-2009 02:21 PM

UPDATE: Friday finally came: race day. I was in the middle of changing tires at my dads shop when my chevy buddy called, saying he couldn't run the malibu. Though, I don't blame him- it was his dad's decision not to run it. After all that trash talk they didn't even show up!!!! So I just said screw it and changed out my rear tires, leaving out all the other speed mods. I still had a great time regardless. I learned a lot from the other mopar guys at the track. Also, my little brother made his very first pass in my car. So did my dad- but he had about 30+ years experience on the street. Haha.

Times and speed?

wouldnt the traction bars help?

Red Devil 05-04-2009 05:29 PM

hmm?? I did a search on that and I found an article in muscle car review that said traditionally mopar guys have know to not run traction bars. the article said that mopars were known to run better with a pinion snubber, rather than traction bars. What is a pinion snubber?

78D200 05-04-2009 05:50 PM

It is like a bump stop that is above where the pinion comes through the housing and helps to keep the axle from twisting upward.

Red Devil 05-04-2009 05:53 PM

oh ok, thanks Tim

Look at my other post on your other thread about (15's) and you can learn a little about hp, and MPH.

Good luck.

LOL figures, the chubbie guys always talk smart till you put the car on the track, ive seen very few come through , and then most still get the beat down. On traction bars, the front of the leaf springs on a mope are designed to finger out or spread open if you will , this allows for a small percentage of axle wind up, this is when the torques being applied, the axle wants to lift up, but the springs counter act that forcing it to stay down, and when you put t- bars on they clamp down the front of the springs stopping the down ward force, the pinion snubber is the metal plate on top of the center section on the rear above where the drive shaft bolts on, they make a snubber with an adj. top so you can limit the amount of up travel the rear does go.

67 GTX 05-05-2009 01:54 PM

so, both of these would help you 1/4 times, wouldnt they?

Red Devil 05-05-2009 03:03 PM

idk, I just read in that magazine that mopar guys have been known to favor the pinion snubber over the traction bars, it didn't say why

67 GTX 05-07-2009 05:34 PM

must have something to do with leaf springs

dr.mopar 02-12-2011 06:10 PM

So if traction bars don't work on Mopars then explain why Mr. Norms shop installed traction bars & a pinion snubber on his projects cars??
