Kickdown band adjustment!
 

Hi Guys,

i need to adjust the kickdown band on my tranny so that it shifts sooner, how would I go about doing that?

I have the factory service manual, but it is extremely vague, and calls for a few special tools.

Car is a 64' Sport Fury with a 383 and a 727 Bigblock tranny, with the console shift.

Careful, stay out of the trans. The adjustment you want is on the kickdown lever on the carb. Adjust it both ways and you will see the difference. Just a couple turns makes a difference.

The only adjustment I can see at the carb (Edlebrock) is on the rod that goes to the tranny, you can make it longer or shorter by turning it. Since I want the kick down to engage sooner I tried making the rod longer by 5 turns, no noticeable affect, then I back it of ten turns to make it shorter, again no effects.

I had the car out for a spin and noticed that she finally shift in to top gear around 3,000rpm, all the other gear changes are smooth and seem to be timed right except for the top gear, what else could it be? Band slipping in the tranny maybe? The fluid level in the tranny is full, it might be slightly over full, maybe 1/4 inch above the full mark on the dip-stick when at temp and idling in N.

on a un-related note, I inadvertently laid 10 of rubber and put the car sideways while leaving the gas station, accidently of course, so there is no lack of power or response on the bottom end? Now if only I could pass on the hi-way without red lining?

Check under the car that the kickdown is attached properly. 5 turns should have made some difference. You were in the right place with that linkage, try a more aggressive adjustment.

The linkage seems solidly attached to the lever on the tranny, I'll try increasing the length by ten turns to see if that makes any difference!
