new guy needs help with a 318!!!!!

So I'm picking up a 1966 318 ploy and 4 speed tranny out of a dodge crew cab tomorrow for $100. After 11 years in the truck it locked up. A few years ago the owner put it outside and it has been outside ever since. I'm looking for rebuild kits and ways to add power, all I can find are stuff on the LA block. Specifically a build by hotrod magazine I think, the one where with just bolt on parts and on pump gasoline they made 400 horsepower. I was wondering if everything they did there would work on the poly? And where could I find other upgrades if that dosnt work. Summit dosnt have anything for the poly. Please help!!!!!

The only reason to try and build a poly is that it would be "cute," "unique," "different"

It most certainly will be very very expensive.

"A few" of the parts in the poly are similar or the same as an LA, but the block, pistons, heads, valve gear, intake and exhaust manifolds are completely different.

I'm not sure, the crank might interchange, distributor, and possibly the timing cover / water pump, but I'm not real sure of that, depending on year

There is almost NO speed equipment for these, and I'd bet finding performance pistons would be EXpensive. I'm sure a good independent cam grinder can grind a cam.

A good intake will just about have to come from "wherever you find it," forums online, ebay, or car show / flea marts

If you just want an old truck to drive with some less expensive horsepower, put an LA or even B/ RB in the thing.

I'm getting this engine cheap, that's why I'm sticking with it, my dream is to drop it in a w150, I want to build it cheap as I'm a high school student with very little money, is there any way to get power out of it? Or even find a rebuild kit just to keep it stock, I found a video talking about how people use to bore it 0.90 over, where would I find pistons and stuff if I did this?

318 Polly is a poor choice for HP build also the truck 4 speed probably has a very low first gear

yuppy 03-03-2014 07:40 PM

It has the granny gear then a first, second, third, fourth. I know its a poor choice but its all I have to work with, even if I can't make any horsepower out of it I would like to find a rebuild kit. Please help me out, I dont need the criticism

RacerHog 03-03-2014 07:46 PM

I dont think your going to like the price of the build once you pincel it together.
Out this way in So-CAl we all use a Place named Egge Engines....
http://www.egge.com/kits?make=DODGE

I would say stay with something more like a LA motor....

Good Luck... :)

Chrysler DID put a 4 bbl in polys in some years. i had a 1959 ply station wagon with one. pulled it out and put 1957 chrysler 392 hemi in it. but dad tried to race GTOs and i told him was giving a way over 1,000 LBS. but that was a LONG time ago.

RacerHog 03-03-2014 08:15 PM

How did you fit the Poly intake on the 392?
I bet that old 348 Pontiac ran pretty darn good... :)

I dont think anyone is trying to critisize you...:naughty:If you take the price of a rebuild kit which will cost you $1575.00 that is the total of the prices Bob gave you...They are trying to help you save money...I understand that the poly is costing you $100.00 but it is not worth the rebuild...You can buy an LA motor cheaper then the rebuild kit will cost you...:doh:So you decide what you want to do....Its a no brainer from everyone here....:slap:Bill

We are not criticising, we are ADVISING.

"I want to build cheap." ---------- Not going to happen. Parts for those engines are expensive as I already stated in my first answer

"I know it's a poor choice" -----------This is called "throwing good money after bad." All of us have made poor choices, and all of us have had to make the best of them at some point. At 65, I've been a little further down this road than you. Do yourself a huge favor..............sell the poly for what you can get out of it. You might gain a buck you might lose a buck. You are wasting your time and your money trying to build a poly.

The truck has a 4 speed !!! It has a low gear 1th 2,3,4, IT DOES NOT have two 1th gears !!! unless it is a 4 wheel drive that has a Hi & low range !!!! even more problems

Coronet 500 03-04-2014 05:25 PM

If your picking it up it's not going to take it apart and have a look, if you have a stand.

My sons have had some odd ideas, looking back so did I. I'd stick with it, take off the valve covers and oil pan and have a look.

I told my youngest son to talk and listen to the older fellas at swap meets and one might take him under his wing, well it happened. You'd be surprised how many guys like to see the younger fellas liking the old V8s and will help out with parts. Could happen here.

yuppy 03-05-2014 09:18 AM

Thanks for all the help guys!!! I picked the engine up last night, the internals so far look really good so I think I'm just going to freshen it up, take it apart and put it back together with new gaskets and stuff.

RacerHog 03-05-2014 02:26 PM

Keep use posted.... :)

yuppy 03-06-2014 11:10 AM

I havent been able to tear into it too much since i dont have an engine stand right now but the cam is in great condition, and the heads are looking really good too. It looks like im just gonna rebuild and flip the engine. So if anybody is in need of a good daily driver 318 let me know. Ill put some pictures up soon

moe7404 03-06-2014 01:34 PM

on my 392 i had stock intake bored out to the newer AFB size. some dont know that the first AFBs had a smaller bore spacing. there are a group of guys that had turned the ploy into high performance. dont for get the polys intake port is very much like the Hemi.

yuppy 03-08-2014 05:43 PM

Well I have torn the engine down and it doesn't look to bad. Two rods broke, and it locked up. The cylinders are really rusty so I'm gonna have to bore them out, where's a good place to get new pistons and rods and rings?

yuppy 03-08-2014 05:52 PM

Ive found a complete rebuild kit for $650. Is this a good price?

RacerHog 03-08-2014 07:27 PM

Whos kit?

yuppy 03-09-2014 06:19 PM

Master engine
