What motors will go in a 74 coronet
I'm just trying to find out what options I have since the stock 318 in my 73 Coronet is now knocking pretty bad. I'm not looking for a hard core racing motor, just something that I can get from the junkyard or a shop that has lying around to get this car driveable.
Rebuilds are so far estimated to run up near $2k, so if I can do a used engine swap for way less, it works for me.
So which motors will be a simple replacement for this car?
Thanks!

hey shishkbob im guessing you might be able to take your engine out yourself and save some money that way but you could go and find a donor car with a 360 in it and put everything from that into your car or i would just look for another 318 to put back into it , there are alot of 318s around if you can call your car yards around your neighborhood as 318s are hard to kill so you should be able to find a decent one for around 500.00 bucks or so where are you located at , have you checked ebay for your area as you might get lucky ..... if you find a 360 the differences between these blocks is that the 340/360 utilizes a different left motor mount attachment and the bellhousings bolt patterns are all the same on the A engines ,,, if you are just driving it for fun and pleasure i would just find another 318 but thats just me but i would tear it down myself and see why its a knocking if you need anything let us know k

Well I'm not a handy man so this would be something that I'd have a shop or friend do. All the calls to performance shops had the estimate going up to $2k or higher. This car is just a little play car and I don't want anything fancy or high performance, just looking to get a decent used motor in it (or rebuild) to get it driveable again.
So far, ebay hasn't proved fruitful but then again, I don't know exactly if a 318 is a 318 is a 318..know what I mean? I've been reading here and there trying to find out what year 318's will go into this car to keep it a direct replacement and to leave out the guesswork.
I'm just weary of junkyards not knowing the history of the motor and me getting stuck with one that will result in me being right back where I am now..looking for a replacement.
Thanks for the reply and the search continues... lol

I would install a 360 if you want something with some more power. If you don't care then just take it to a motor shop and have them swap in a reman 318. If you were closer I would sell you the 318 reman long block that I have in my 78 D200. The previous owner had it installed and it only cost him about $1500 total for everything to have a motor shop get it and swap it in.
You will want a 318 from teh late 60s to the early 90s (91 I think is the last year they made the LA small block before the magnums came out?
