1970 Fury III Firing Order Problems

Hello everyone! I had a thread a while back about my grandfathers '70 Fury and a possible sale value...well...he's still back and forth on selling it, and in the mean time, is attempting to tune it up.

So he was replacing a spark plug wire that had melted near the headers, but ended up removing a 2nd wire...and in attempting to get those two replaced properly, ended up pulling all 8 wires

Ive looked up the firing order the 383 he's got, and ive got

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, CCW from the drivers front cylinder. Also dist. rotation is CCW, starting from the labeled "1" on the cap.

Buttttt after wiring this up...it did not want to crank, and when it finally attempted to fire, it backfired, and died promptly. No luck firing the engine since then.

Cliffnotes: Can anyone confirm that is the correct firing order, and if so, what would cause the backfire and subsequent no-start?

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 is the correct firing order. Are you sure that the number 1 wire was on the right spot on the dizzy?

You have it 180 degrees off! You have number one where it is on the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke. I have done the same thing many times, easy mistake to make. Bring the balancer around one more time and do it again. You're close.

If the distributor is not in correctly the "number 1" on the cap is useless. Bring the No.1 cylinder up to TDC and see where the rotor points, that will be number 1, then go from there 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 CCW.
