318 issue

i got a 318,from a guy..started it up, blowing out the dip stick, theres water in the oil, here what happen, during my cking out of the engine, it ran well... then with out warning it stoped, like somone grabed the belts...after that i couldnt turn it over at all, not even by hand. dipstick showed way passed full.after letting it set overnight i tried starting it, fired up and ran, but if u let it idle, it would suddedly stop..my guess was that their was too mush water in the oil, that the block must be to full to let the pistons go up and down, very well...i kept adding water before i got to this point...so i drained the oil and the water, added some old oil i had, now it starts up, and idles good, how can i clean the engine inside, after i find the leak...or is it to far gone, no enging noise, to speak of... would it be a head gasket or maybe an intake gasket leaking, its a 68 318

could be a intake or headgasket, or even a hole in the cylinder bore, rare but its happend to me,
cleaning the inside of the engine, you could add some transmission fluid to the oil its very high detergent, if you worried about the water being in there just drain it out like you have done, and fill it back up with good oil, wont take long for the lil bit of water left in there to evaporate

thanks for the info, if it helps i ckd the oil before i started it, it was at the full mark, water entered the engine after i started it and kept adding water.....anyone want to guess what i will find, bad intake, or head gasket, or a cracked blocked....never saw bubbles in the radaitor, just super hot exhaust that burnted the grass....

hot exhaust, could turn out to be a leaking intake,, X my fingers for you

sounds like a bad head gasket

well i got the intake gasket off , they look thin around the water jackets in the front, but no real signs of leaking....as i said before, the oil was good before i started it and kept adding water... and their was anti coolant in the bottom of the raideator and in the block....thinking of puting on a new set of intake gaskets and pumping up the cooling system and see if it leaks down. if the a head gasket is bad then i would think it would leak down, but not shure

lets hope you only have to replace the intake gaskets:)

also as it was running no signs of bubbles in the rad at all, or smell...

did it run long enough for the thermostat to open?
