318 no start issue
 

so since ive last posted about my 318 monaco with the bent/ broken rod i took the intake off to see about 7 of the rode were severely bent and the broken one lying on the valley so i tore the heads off cleaned everything replaced all the push rods put the whole motor back together changed the oil (made a huge mess on the drive way parents tried to kill me) and now she wont start i poured some gas in the carb nothing when i turn the key it sounds like the starter is the only thing turning the motor i replaced the plugs and wires and everything seems to be hooked up correctly, but she wont start:( any help would be much appreciated

What exactly did you pull off, did you do anything to the distributor, or mess with the timing? Perhaps missing a electrical connection or something.

i took off intake and heads didnt touch distri uter and had the car properly timed before i took it apart

How many miles on the motor?

139 000 just rebuilt the top end, ran before i took it apart but bad cause of push rods

are the plugs wet? are you getting spark to them? check the compression? right size push rods

i got spark put new plugs and wires got the exact push rods that came out of it getting fuel think possibly timing but no clue, when i turn the key nothing happens best way to put it the starter turns the motor over but thats it no ignition at all

compression test? a motor only needs 4 things to run suck,squeeze,bam,and blow is it electronic ignition, or points? what color is the spark coming off of the plug should be whitish/blue =hot spark yellowish/orange weak spark why were the heads removed? has anything been done to them? do a compression test if your readings are low try squirting some motor oil in there to recoat the rings and bring the compression up

points and wouldn't it still run with low compression and this problem on all cylinders? i will try it tomorrow baught a compression tester today any other possibilities please let me know

Like was said before ... the odds of you having cam timing issues are great. Are you capable of pulling the front cover off ?

to get to the timing chain? id dont think so

does it sound normal when cranking or does it spin faster and easier?

with at least one valve cover off, are the rocker tight and moving the valves when cranking?

did you look at the lifters? without pushrods, they may have popped out or lost their oil.

bring the engine to top dead center. where is the distributor rotor pointing?

You do not have the mechanical ability to inspect or change it ?

this is a dumb off the wall question but ill ask ne ways did u put a new set of head gaskets on it? you said before that the motor was running but poorly because of the bent pushrods and that you didnt remove the dist so the timing should not really be a factor in this problem unless something is wired wrong is there anything in the intake like a rag that might have been put in there after the carb was removed? was the fuel line filter put on the right way?are the rocker shafts tightened allowing the rockers to move up and down?

k i dont hsave a timing light but can i really test it with out it being running, and to ef i replaced the gaskets i turned the engine with the rocker cover off the valves are opening and closing properly nothing in the intake and i too the fuell line off after the filter so its on straight its getting spark and has fuel also added fuel directly into the carb but wont catch just turns over cause the starter is turning it no ignition :S

other possibilities
sounds like a weak spark,.......maybe?
remove a spark plug and crank it over while the plug is in the wire look at the color of the spark you want it to be a white/blue color yellow/red is not really a hot spark did you put back on the ground strap? or by any chance bump the dist while removing the intake or it could be compression when it was apart did you really go to town cleaning it up maybe with the cleaning you might have washed the oil away from the rings now this could give you serious blow by which in turn will not start the motor try alittle bit of squirts from a oil squirter with some 10w/40 motor oil in each cyl then crank it over acouple of times not trying to start it just to recoat to the cyl walls and rings this should bring compression back up im kinda at a loss without really looking at it but maybe some of these ideas may help

spark is good just waiting for good weather to hook up my compression tester and see, cause not igniting at all so i might have the valves un adjusted i'll get back to you guys with the outcome and thanks again for all your help

hey everyone i got one prob fixed the vavles were off so no compression now it sounds like it wants to start but wont can smell gas from the exhaust, and good spark wonder if its just a matter of quickstarting the hell out of it as it was just put together??

try alittle bit of squirts from a oil squirter with some 10w/40 motor oil in each cyl then crank it over acouple of times not trying to start it just to recoat to the cyl walls and rings this should bring compression back up you might have washed out the cylinders with all the gas going into it and not firing

SHE RUNS thanks for all your help basically first the compression was off then the timing now it runs and im gonna hook the timing light up but have no clue what it should be set at any ideas? i was gonna go with 0 :S

what year is it -and are you in california ? california has a different degree

if you live in california and move to a different state, do you have to change the timing?

the car is a 66 and im in canada toronto area

i'd start with around 10btc and fine tune it from there, now mine seems to like that area of timing but every motor is diff

i do not have a manual for that year but like e says try starting out with 10 but it could be around 2 btdc if i remember right

hey i set it to around 6 sounds nice but for some reason its started good when i hammer it now it chokes out when i hammer it then goes but runs smooth and doesn't shake on idle?? i hope to god its not another push rod

try advancing the timing some more it should get rid of the bog when you stomp on the gas. also did you disconect the vacum advance when you set the timing?

yes i did disconnect it when setting it there was no bog earlier but now its bad it started after a small back fire dont know what happen was running good then one back fire now it bogs

have you put your timing light back on it to make sure the timing chain didn't jump?
