383 distributor choice
Hey,
So I am currently running a rebuilt factory distributor with a Flamethrower II coil and have replaced the points with a magnetic pickup. Im thinking its time to go to a new distributor maybe something with an adjustable curve and possibly running an MSD ignition box. What would you guys suggest/what are you running? Hoping to find something with a vaccum advance that does not have clerance issues with edelbrock alluminum heads as mine currently hits my heads. let me know what you guys think. Thanks, Gary |
Why not just the run of the mill Mopar conversion it?

Exactly what heads?

I agree with the distributor but what heads have problems with clearance?

Could you lift the oil pump gear and turn on the cam one tooth to give yourself more room for the vacuum advice can?:)

The heads I'm running are edelbrock e street heads and the distributor I currently have hits with the clips that hold the cap on or if I turn it far enough the vacuum advance hits..... |

Would you bother running an msd box along with this or is that a waste of time and money?

One more thing the conversation distributer is difficult to limit total timing if your using a larger cam and need more inneshal timing.
So you might want to look at your future plans for your project because you only want to buy this stuff one time.cash |

I have run the kit then progressed to the MSD , it just depends on the use . I use all MSD distributer, box and coil but the conversation kit works on mild street motors. I had trouble over 6500 rpm and 10 cr even with the crome box.
Then I hear they are junk and better to run a stock replacement...... I'm currently only at 9.1:1 compression and this is my cam. http://www.compcams.com/(S(ylnnew55r...?csid=707&sb=0 I'm open to suggestions and agree to do it correct once instead of buying things twice. I just don't want to waste money on something never really needed. Thanks everyone. |
With the cam you have the conversion kit would be nice and the way to go.:)

They used to offer a spring kit for the distributor I would get than also so you can get the advance all in by 2500 rpm.
Sounds like a nice build, like to hear more about it. |

Sounds like a nice build, like to hear more about it. Thanks. ill call Mancini tomorrow and see if they still have the advance kit. Yeah the build has turned out pretty good so far. 383 (bored 30 over) Kb162 Pistons Factory rods and crank balanced Edelbrock e street heads Comp cams cam, lifters and valve springs Performer dual plane intake 670 street avenger carb Tti headers 727 trans with a 2800 stall Backed by an 8 3/4 rear end with a 3:23 gear set. Didn't end up doing as good of burnouts as I wanted but for a c body I guess I can't ask for too much more. Lol |

The only thing I don't like is the 670 street avevenger , it is a 650 economy carb from Holley. A 650 or 750 bp or hp would be better.

So what distributor do you run? I have heard ok things about the msd plug and play ones but then heard just run the pertronix version as its way cheaper and just as good.

Nothing wrong with most anything you run. as long as it's good for the intended use... I think I have run most everything from Allison to Ziggi....lol |

I did have to jet the 670 up for sure, I tried running a 770 and it just seemed to be too rich at idle and then fall on it's face. I have been contemplating either a pro form 750 or eft for a while. If you were going to throw any other carb on where would you go? |

Hey so has anyone ever ran the proform electronic distributor?
I can't find any specifics to tell it apart from the Mancini racing one and can get it locally..... Also I bought a line lock Thanks. |

I like the MSD Pro billet distributer and they have boxs better suited for the street than the 6AL. The MSD distributer is completely adjustable for the performance tuneup and very high quality. If I wasn't going with the convertion kit I'd go MSD. |

Too much energy waste, especially in a heavy car around town or hilly low speed roads. |

I got the exact same cam as you on the 440 on the land yacht. I think that the 906 heads work much better than (stock) heads in small blocks. Your aftermarket heads may flow even better, and your short stroke may be ideal for very high rpm. But at any rate, I need to have plenty of torque in the 440, and not too worried about too high rpms. I have never revved it above 5200 ... yet. Of course, we are looking for different type of performance. But with a 3.23 and probably big tires that your Newport has, you can drive it fast.
