440/727 from motorhome to car?
 

Will a 440 with 727 tranny from a motorhome bolt right into a car?
Is the tranny built different for the motorhome or could I use it for a car
without having to change some of the internal parts.

I have an opportunity to get a 440 with 727 for $300.00 but if it's not compatable, it might not be worth the trouble.

Anybody know about this?

They are the same...... pretty much.

If they are running, then buy it now. The 727 is built up some more than the 727s that came in the cars due to the weight of the motorhomes. I have also head that the heads are wider due to the cooling passages (not 100% sure if it is true though). Even if you can't use the motor, the tranny is worth the $300, as long as it does not need a rebuild.

The output shafts on the tranny is different. Mobile homes use the bolt up type of drive shaft.

not all of em did.
and the oil pan (engine) will be different. alot of MH engines had Godawful low compression ratio. also the motor mounts (the "stands" that bolt to teh ears on the block) also different between truck and car.

The yoke on the tranny is an easy fix as you can get new ones. I'd be more worried about fitting a long tailshaft tranny in a car that does not have the length for it. A-bodies are known fo that.

The oil pan can be replaced with the proper one for the car it is going in. Same thing with the motor mount plates.

Yes the compression is different but I didn't think it was that low (maybe 8.5:1).

This would be going into a B-body.
The engine would be torn down and built up on the high performance side.
The tranny would be inspected or repaired.
But, since I'm dealing with someone from Craigslist, I haven't got a phone call back to come look at it or even know if it's still available.
Why ae people so flakey?

A little off the main subject, but about flakey people. Just last weekend, a buddy of mine found a car on craigslist he was very interested in. The guy told him that no one had called yet, and that he would hold the car till the next day so he could drive the 250 miles to look at it. Just 50 miles from the destination, the guy called my buddy's cell to tell him he had just sold the car. I think it would have been worth the extra 50 miles just to put a boot in has a$$!!!

hell yeah i woulda drove the rest of the way. he woulda went to the docs to get a bootarectumy done

I can't say about the 440 but the 400 out of a motorhome is a sweet block!!!! Last 3 casting numbers are 230... They have much thicker walls and can take a bore of .0100 . I know!!!!!! I have two of them!!!!

Hopefully it is an older motor home with a steel crank 440. The last old Winnebago I came across had a clean HP2 440 in it.

The tail shaft on the transmission is likely to be different in some way, but you can probably still bolt it in and get the drive shaft cut down (or extended) to fit. The oil pan is likely too be different, but a replacement pan is not hard to come by.

Well I am glad I didn't drive 50 plus miles to be bummed out.
Turns out the guy didn't even know what he was selling. Sure it was a 440 but, he couldn't tell me details about it. He says he pulled it out of a motorhome that caught on fire. He guessed it ran before he pulled it...... Didn't matter because I was going to tear it down and build it up anyway.
It sounded like he had a few engines and swapped parts to make one thing run and this was the engine he picked clean and now he needed to sell because he's "moving"
The tranny is the bolt up type from another motorhome.
It would have been a sale if the engine was complete from carb to oil pan and original tranny. Just neededing a rebuild.
I'm not interested in someone elses junk.
