440 heads 383 heads?
will 383 heads fit on a 440? im rebuilding my 440 and the heads are cracked in all the exhaust seats. is this a common problem with these heads?
i have a spare 383 sitting around at a freinds house but i dont wanna rip it apart unless i no there ganna work.
thanks

They'll bolt right on. The valves may be a different size, or you may have different springs, but if you're just looking for interchangability, yep, grab em and put em on there.

Unless the ones on your 440 are something like Max Wedge heads, odds are they aren't worth fixing, once you take cost into consideration. You can buy new, ready to bolt on, complete aluminum heads for right at $900 a set. See what your machine work would cost, then compare.

yeah just a clean & light lapp of the valves & new valve stem seals & you'll be right as rain . & like ol bucky said if your spending any where near $400 spend the extra $500 & get those 440 source steath heads , guys i know over here that have em are very happy .

i dont no what the stock heads are but they have the numbers 3769902 stamped on them. are they worth rebuilding? as for the machining i can nurle them and grind the valves and seats myself the only thing i need is to have valve seats put into them and im not sure yet if the machine shop can do it and how much it will cost if they can.
thanks, jason

they are 902 heads it's the last 3 numbers we go off . it will cost to much , & the valves aren't suited to unleaded fuel . & you will find the valve guides will need k-lining or replacing , a acid clean ect ect is it worth it . if you can't do it your self or have a buddy that will help you out i would definitely get the 440 source stealth heads . they flow much better, the same as eddlebrock rpm performer heads & have bigger new stainless under cut stem valves new guides , can handle up to a .600 th lift cam straight up . it would be bolt on 50 - 70 hp & if you added a mild cam 484 lift or there abouts you'd be looking at 400 + hp easy with a good tune 450 hp . if you only want a std replacement i'd still use them . it's a no brainer to me 902's are just old boat anchors . hey i still did up a pair of 906 heads & spent $1600 on them but that was just because i was stubborn & wanted to see how much power i could get out of them my self , I'm only using them to run my engine in & to flow them . but if i was you go the stealth heads for sure . get some get some how do you kill wemen & children ! easy just don't lead em so much

the 902 heads are from the year 1974. They have the same ports as any of the 440's or 400's from 71 on. Not as good as the 68 to 70 906's, but darn close. They did come with hardened valve seats (exhausts). Would be a good head to rebuild if you were on a budget. they have an 88cc combustion chamber just like any bigblock from 68 on.

The worst thing I see with what you want to do is that you said all the exhaust ports have cracks. I think once they have the heads in place, and have to oven weld the cracks, then cut that down, then cut the seats, install hardened seats, maybe change valves, you're looking at a LOT of money. The cracks are NOT a good thing.

i think a second hand working heads is the way 2 go for cheap . because as soon as you start pulling old heads down before you know it they need a full machine job + parts & when you weigh up what you get for $900 with stealth heads there is no comparison . thats all at leased have a look at them , you can use std rocker arms & head bolts they'll run cooler & ping less . i know I'm very one sided but it's the way 2 go for sure . my mate bought some for his 520 cid 440 stroker , i spent a bit more & bought Indy ez heads but i still had to do a pair of iron 906's just because . if your dead set on a tight budget have a look at these 452's they are genuine unleaded heads or have a go with your 902's just don't waste money on them thats all . if you do use the 902's back cut or grind the ski jump on the back of the valve head & bowl blend if you can . it is so easy it's not just for hp more for efficiency & broader torque curve . good luck

sell them & get stealth heads . or 452's like ole mate above has . any of the open chamber types will do . i would look for a good set of 452's shop around . i still think the stealth heads for $899 are a bargin , they have 84 cc chambers & cast iron is junk ... you must be sick of me buy now ay .
