727 trans lock up issues

I just installed a '79 727 into my Jeep CJ7, and I am having a problem with the engine stalling once I put it in gear (forward or reverse). It shifts fine into 2nd and 3rd and back down, but as soon as I come up to a stop sign or light I have to pop it into neutral to keep it running. My engine is an AMC 360 and did not have this problem with the manual trans prior.
What is going on?

Does your cj have the stock torque converter?
have you done any trans work?
sounds like the converter is locked up. check the wiring to the trans and make sure it's not unplugged or damaged.

The torque converter is and trans are stock, pulled out of a 79 jeep wagoneer.

I have not done any work to it, just installed it.

There is no wiring to the converter, it is a mechanical lock up.

Chris, check to see if there is a restriction in the trans cooler lines, on old chrysler lock up units the converter charge pressure and the cooler out are tied together if you look at a oil chart. bypass the lines temperarly front to rear and see if it stalls, if it does then there is a restriction in the lines or the cooler. if not it is possible that the trans has some internal issues that you'll need to address. Pete.

Whats the Cam like in the motor???

Will it idle in drive just if you screw the idle right up when it's in park???

Sounds like you have a worked cam & need a stally .
