904 Tail Shaft Swap
 

I have an 86 Dodge RAM shortbed with an engine and tranny from a 90 model RAM. The transmission mount let loose and caused the tranny to twist which resulted in the torque converter backing off and busting the bell housing. A friend gave me another 904 tranny, however, it has a long tail shaft and mine, being a shortbed pickup, uses the short tailshaft. My question is this, is it possible to switch the tailshafts? It appears as though they both have the same bolt pattern but I am unfamiliar with the internals. I realize i could have the driveshaft shortened but it seems it would be much more cost effective to swap the tail shafts if possible.

i believe they can be swapped. try asking a local rebuilder or make friends with the person that does rebuilds at the local dealership.
