another 318 problem

I have a 318 with a 670 CFM carter carb. The problem is when i try to really open the car up in drive(peddle to the ground) it makes like a crackling noise and gives up. Some times the engine will die and sometimes it will almost die but wont if i let my foot off the gas. It will make a poof like sound out the carb also. Whats it doing?

Tough without more info. What gear, speed, and engine RPM are we talking? Only from a dead stop? Any speed? Does it do this in neutral, just blipping the throttle?

Does the acellerator pump work?

My first guess might be poor spark

It has great spark and it will do it in any gear, from stop to whatever speed. Its like i can put the peddle almost all the way down but the last bit will cause it to do it. And Yeah it will do it in neutral also.

Once again, this sounds like weak spark. What do you have for ignition? (You failed to mention what year, model)

You running points? Chrysler electronic? Aftermarket?

Might be a weak condensor or bad points, if you are running a "points" distributor,

Might be a bad coil

Might be dirty, broken rotor or cap

Might be bad coil wire or even bad plug wires or both

Might have a plug with a problem, like an internal problem that is acting like a disconnect (not a short or foul)

Do you have a multimeter?
