I have no idea, cant say that i have ever seen one out side of the drum ??? what did you connect it to

now im thinking !!! is it the one that is wraped around the drum ???? if so i think they used to use them as something to do with the vibration or something

I think it has to do with disipating heat or something

Thats what i think also if i remember correctly but if you were to buy new ones i dont think they have them on them anymore ?

Not sure. Cars today don't have them, so they may not be necessary, but I'm not sure.

Take the springs back off and throw them in the steel pile

If you got the new drums from auto zone, theyre the china pcs. that mopar muscle mag was talking about a few yeasr back. they are junk, they have a bad habit of getting hot due to the thin walls of the drum sides, and they arent perfectly round, they have an oval shape to them causing them to over heat and then warp after a short life cycle. then you cant turn them due to the thin layer of lining. I had a pair. ended up paying twice the price for new napa , made n usa pcs. just be carefull. they have a real bad brake fade to them as well from over heating.

that spring is there alot of the time for when the person is turning them at a shop. What is does is absorbs the vibration waves so the cutting tool leaves a nice smooth surface, if its not there while they turn the drum it will leave a rough surface
